Wellington, Monday. John Houghton pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court on nine charges of theft, but as there are four charges of forging to be preferred against him in the Supreme Court, his sentences were left to the higher Court.
The Wellington Garrison Band accompanies the Commonwealth Contingent to Melbourne.
Nelson, Monday. At a meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board it was decided, by seven to three, to adopt Mr. Leslie Reynolds' No. 2 plan for improvements to the Nelson Harbour.
The Nelson volunteers, With some from Marlborough, have been in camp during the holidays, and though rain was experienced till to-day, some good work was done. There were about 500 under canvas. To-day a shamfight and review were witnessed "by large numbers of people, and the volunteers acquitted themselves exceedingly well. Athletic and'cycling sports at Foxhill today were largely attended, and the events were well contested. There were several outside competitors. Evans, of Wellington, won the Foxhill Handicap, the Halfmile, and the 220 yds and 440 yds Hurdles. Carrison, of Wellington, won the Two-mile Amateur Cycle. Dxtnedin, Monday. At Earnscleugh Flat, near Alexandra,"two men, while sluicing, unearthed the thigh bones and pelvis of a man supposed to have been buried for 30 years. ' Westport, Monday. The coal output from Westport last week was 9636 ions scwt, of which the Weli.tport Coal Company shipped 9093 tons, and the Westport Co-operative Company 545 * tons scwfc. .{;.., .;'-
