BIKKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held in the Zion Bill schoolroom on Thursday evening. Hip Mayo. (Mr. J. H. Witheford, M.H.R.) presided. There were also present: Messrs. A. Keycs, J. R. Gascoigne, P. Donahoe. W. Wallace, J. Hadfield.and H. P. Taylor. Accounts to the amount of £14. 15s were passed for payment. A letter was read from Mr Wilson (engineer to the Waitemata County Council), who stated that he had examined the brick culvert at Pine Avenue and reported as to what was required to make it safe. Consideration of the report was deferred. A lettei was rea"d from MessiF. Napier an. Filzherbert, on behalf of Mr, David Swiudale, requesting the Council to supply..-Mi. Swindale with 40 9in drain pipes to prevent damage to property. The /natter was left in the hands of the Mayor and town clerk. A lettei was read from Mr. A. Riddle, asking permission to erect a verandah in front of his store. Permission was granted, subject to the usual conditions. The report of the Works" Committee, was read and adopted. A tender for the' carting contract was received from Mr. T. Church at lis oei day; for one horse and cart and 13s per day for two horses and cart. ' The tender was. accepted. A letter was read from the Vunkland Cycle League io laying down cy.'ie tracks within the borough. Consideration of the lettei was deferred. The town clerk was instructed to write to the VVaitomatH County Council requesting them to keep McCullaro's Road in repair. It was resol"cd to have a polling booth at Chelsea, and Mr. .1. McCarthy was appointed deputy-returniog officer, and Messrs. McPhail and Gascoigie scrutineers. At the conclusion of the reeling the Mayor addressed 'he Council at some length, stating that whether in the now Council or not he would always dc his very best to advance the borough. Mr. Keyes advocated borrowing a larg. sum to provide a water supply, provide a town hall, cut down the hillnea. the wharf, and metal the roads. Consideration of the scheme was deferred for the consideration of the new Council.— Correspondent.]
