BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held at the offices, Victoria Arcade, yesterday, Mr. L. J. Bagnall (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. Luke, Blades, McLeod, Farrcll, and McKenzie. .

Leave of Absence: Leave of absence was granted to Dr. McArthur and Mr. J.: Lamb, members of the Board. The action of the chairman (Mr. Bagnall) in granting leave, of absence to Mr. R. D. Stewart, headmaster of the VVellesley-street school, who has been appointed to the Education Commission, was confirmed.

Chairman's Report: The report of the chairman, among other matters, touched regretfully on the death of Mr. Alfred John Bitten, headmaster of the Coromandel school for some 12£ years, and stated that resignations had been received from Miss N. L. Francis (Mamaku school), Miss H. T. Shortt (Richmond Road school), Miss A. M. Lindsay (Pakuranga school). Miss F. 6. Aickin (Driving Creek school), Miss F. M. Pitwood (Hikurangi school), Miss M. Spargo (Katikati No. 2 school). The report was adopted, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy and condolence to the widow of the lato Mr. Litten.

Finance Committee: The report or tixe Finance Committee- was submitted as un<^-Y: —1. Your committee have accepted the following tenders:— T. Howe, £125, for erection of teacher's house at Manukau Heads 'G. Garton, £57 15s, for roofing teacher's house at Mangonui. 2. Your committee have forwarded to the Minister claims for grants from the vote for buildings in newly-settled districts to the amount of £2338, in respect of buildings erected or in process of erection at Makarau, Manawaru, Netherton, Omahu, Opouriao, and Waiau. 3. Your committee have authorised the supply of model rifles to the cadet corps formed at the Richmond Road, Remuera, and Waiokaraka schools. Applications for rifles from the following schools are held over until receiptof a, further supply from Wellington : —Ponsonby, .Parawai, Newton West, Kauaeranga Sandes-street, Nelson-street,, Northcoto, Newton East, Epsom, Mount Eden, and Helensville. 4. Your committee recommend that, owing to the lateness of the season, the distribution of the grant of £64- 9s lOd, received from the vote for encouragement of swimming in the public schools, be hold over until next spring. 5. Your committee, having conferred with the chief inspector, recommend that a permanent model school bo established, in accordance with his recommendation, under the charge of a competent master, and that steps be taken to consult the Ponsonby School Committee 'with a view to building the school on a portion of the unoccupied ground at the Richmond Road school. 6. Your committee, having conferred with the representatives of the Auckland Teohnical School, recommend that the Board should take over the maintenance of the school upon the terms set forth in the Minister's letter, dated March 2, 1901, and that the Board should appoint an Advisory Committee to assist in the management of the school. The Chairman said the committee had given the question of the establishment of a model school every consideration, and had come to the conclusion that the inspector's report should be given effect to. It was thought that the school might bo joined to the Richmond Road school. The matter of the Technical School had also claimed attention, and the committee considered that it was desirable that the Board should take the present school over. The proposals were warmly supported by other of the members, and the report was then unanimously adopted. Messrs. E. Bartley, T. Herbert, G. Fowler, Hutchinson, J. J. Holland, and Professor Brown were appointed an Advisory Committeo to the Board in connection with the Technical School, on the motion of Mr. Farroll. Selection of Teachers: The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee contained the following recommendations:—(l) That the following appointments should be authorised by the Board: Mr. F. J. Mullins to be teacher of Maungataivhiri Valley school; Mr. E. W. Stephenson to be teacher of Puketo school; Mr. E. H. Smith to be teacher of Dacre's and Ti Point schools; The Rev. J. Lothian to be teacher of Muriwai "aided" school; Mr. W. F. Johns to bo teacher of Wharekawa "aided" school; Miss J. F. P. Davis to be teacher of Paterancd school; Miss E. M. Fielder to be teacher of Huia school; Miss J. Hueston to bo teacher of Mareretu sohool; Miss G. C. Harper to be teacher of Glen Murray school; Miss A. M. Matthews to be teacher of Brooklyn school; Mrs. I. L. Bradshaw to be teacher of Opuawhanga " aided" school; Miss M. C. Tregear to be teacher of Karaka "aided" school; Miss E. K. F. Walker to be teacher of Matapouri aided" school; Mr. A. H. Gatland to be second assistant-master, Waihi school; Ml. A. A. Turner to be second assistant-master. Mount Eden school; Miss M. A. De Montalk to be an assistant-teacher, Newton West school; Miss A. M. Nixon to be an assistant-teacher, Driving Creek school; Miss®. Hamilton to bo assistant-teacher, Papatoetoe school; Miss J. Ray to bo assistant-teacher, Waihou school; Miss M. M. Crawford, junior-assist-' ant, to Pakuranga school; Miss M. S. Lavery, junior-assistant, to Hikutaia school; Mr. W. C. Wilson, pupil-teacher, from Driving Creek to Coromandel school; Miss A. M. Monstedt, pupil-teachor, from Coromandel to Driving Creek school; Miss G. K. Clover, pupil-teacher, from Howick to Daxgavillo school: Miss M. L. Green, pupilteacher, from Mercury Bay to Newton West school; Miss A. E. Joyce, pupil-teacher, to Aoroa school; Miss F. Morrison, pupilteacher, to Hobsonville school; Miss E. J. Wilcox, pupil-teacher, to Waikumete school;: Miss A. Myles, pupil-teacher, to Howick school; Miss Minnie Smith, pupil-tacher, to Mercury Bay school: Miss Bella McGregor, pupil-teacher/ on' trial, Whangarei Heads school; Miss Eva Walsh, to be sewingteacher. Harrisvillo school; Mrs. Bbxketfc to bo sewing-teacher, To Ra.hu school; Mrs. Priestland to be sewing-teacher, Avoca school. (2)- That school committees bo consulted in regard to proposed appointments, as follows:Mamaku; Miss M. H. Taylor; Fairburn's Road and , Takahue. Miss E. J.". Sheffield; Kaipara Flats, Miss E. C. Quinn : Kohekohe. Mr. R. Barton. (3) That a second assistant-master be appointed to the Richmond Road school. (4) That the applications for the appointment of pupil-teachers to the following schools be held over until the average attendance shall reach the minimum number prescribed by regulations: — Arapohue, Hastings, Kai - angahako, To Kopnru, Whangarei. The report was adopted as road.

i Election of Chairman : In accordance with the Education Boards Election Act, Mr. L. J. Bagnal! resigned his seat as chairman, and was, on the motion of Mr. McKenzie, seconded by Mr. McLeod, unanimously reelected to the chair. Eulogistic reference was made by those present to the chairman's past services. Mr. Bagnall returned thanks, and retains his seat until the second week in August.

High School Governors: The Rev. Cubitfc and Mr. AY. A. Carruth were reappointed governors of the Whangarei Grammar School. Tenders : Tenders were accepted as under : —For teacher's house at Waihou, Messrs Dudley and Frith, £380; teacher's house' at Onowhero, Mr. Smith, £4-17. New School at Onehunga: Thirteen tenders were received for the erection of the now school building at Onehunga, and that of Mr. G. M. Handcock (£2371) was accepted. Other tenders were: —J. G. "Whangamata: Decided to open a school, there being 30 children of age. An application from Fencourt was deferred. ■■ Buildings: Applications for buildings and additions to buildings were dealt with as follows:—Avoea: Sum of £10 granted towards teacher's cottage. Awatuna: Tender accepted for removal of building. Manawaru: The architects were authorised to call for tenders for an addition to the school building. Northcote: Application for addition to the teacher's house granted. Waiuku: Question of additional accommodation referred to the inspector to report. An application from Taupaki was deferred. Exhibits for School Instruction: At the request of Mr. Mitchell (Mitchell and "Watt. Board's architects), the members of the Board inspected a large number of illustrated charts,' books, and articles used in England in the instruction of the younger children of the kindergartens. The exhibits collected by Mr. Mitchell during his recent trip Home, were in many instances favourably viewed by the members, as a means of imparting instruction to children. '
