BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PARNELL. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held in- the Council Chambers last night, the Mayor, Mr. Hugh Campbell, presiding. There were also present : Messrs. Briggs, Fitt, Thomas, Cozens, Gilmour, Petford, and MacCormick. , St. George's Bay Beach: Notification was received from the Auckland Harbour Board that the . owners of logs lying on St. George's Bay beach, and which were the : subject of complaints, had been instructed to remove same within the booms. The King's Accession: The Hon. C. Hill Trevor, A.Q.C., wrote on behalf of His Excellency the Governor, thanking the Mayor and councillors for the congratulatory resolutions passed by them on the accession of His Majesty King Edward VII., and stating further that His Excellency was pleased with the tenor of the resolutions, and with the form in which they were conveyed. ■■"Salutary. Precautions: A circular letter was received from Dr. Mason, chief' health officer, urging the Council to take sanitary precautions in view of' the reappearance of bubonic plague in Australia, and to make a crusade against rodents. Referred to the Streets Committee.

Finance: Accounts totalling £207 lis 9d were passed for payment. Water Consumption: The turncock reported that the- consumption of water in the borough during the' past fortnight amounted to 800,000 gallons. Hobson Bay Sewer: The tender of R. •Saunders (£54- 14s) was accepted for the supply of totara trestles in connection with the extension of the Hobson Bay sewer. Public Pound: It was decided to make an offer to the trustees of the Anglican Church for the site required for a public pound. . Water-cart: Mr. Gilmour moved, " That an up-to-date water-cart be procured for the borough." He stated that the dust nuisance in Parnell was abominable, and was depreciating the value of property in the main street. Mr. Fitt seconded. Mr. Petford moved as an amendment, "That the matter be adjourned for three months." Mr. Cozens seconded, and the amendment was carried. On the motion of the Mayor, the following committee was set up to go into the matter of watering the streets, and to report at the last meeting of the present Council: — Messrs. Thomas, Gilmour, and Briggs. NEWMARKET. The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening. Present : Messrs. Jno. McColl (the Mayor), F. Bennett, J. M. Laxon, J. Lumpkin, J. •Smerdon, C. G. Laurie, J. Caston, and A. Seccombe. ■ - By-laws: On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to hold a meeting of a committee consisting of the members on.Monday evening next, in order to consider the revision of the borough by-laws. Burgess List: It was resolved to hold the usiial statutory meeting on Wednesday week, in order ito check the burgess list. Morrow-street: Mr. J. Gannon wrote asking that Morrow-street be tarred- and sanded. It was decided to tar and sand portions of Morrow, Eden and Burke Streets. Huntly Avenue: Mr. J. Wolmer wrote complaining of the inadequacy of the water supply in Huntly Avenue. It was decided to reply that the matter would shortly receive the attention of the Council. Public Health : The Public Health Department wrote asking the Council to take precautionary steps towards securing the thorough sanitation of the borough, in view of the recent reappearance of plague in Australia. The letter yas received. Abattoirs: The Department of Agriculture drew attention to those sections of the Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1900, dealing with the establishment of abattoirs for all 'boroughs of 2000 inhabitants or more, and asking what had been done in this direction by the Council. Mr. Lumpkin said that nothing had been done, towards securing a site for the purpose. Consideration of the matter was deferred. " Carlton Gore Road : Mr. Bennett reported that the Streets Committee had viewed the proposed portion of Carlton Gore Road to be cut down, and estimated that about 400 ft would have to be removed. Consideration of the matter was deferred till next meeting, the cost of the work to be ascertained in the meantime, and specifications to be prepared. " ONEHUNGA. The ordinary meeting of the Onehunga BorOugh Council was held last night. Presents Dr. W. R. Close-Erson (the Mayor) in the chair, Mrs. Yates, Messrs. J. Brown, S. Bradley, J. Shaldrick, C. McLeod, C. V. Hill, and W. Colledge. Correspondence: A request from a number of ratepayers, that a footpath be formed on the east side of Norman's Hill,, from the Beach Road to the corner of Arthur-street, was referred to the Streets Committee, with power to act. A letter received from Mr. J. Richie, secretary of the Department of Agriculture,' calling attention to the fact that under the new Slaughtering Act, all boroughs of 2000 inhabitants or over must provide public abattoirs within. 12 months from April 1, 1901, was referred to the new Council, on tho motion of the Mayor. Mr. C. Davis wrote complaining of the growth of furze on Alma-street. Referred to the Streets Committee. The Auckland Agricultural Association wrote pointing out that the Bathurst burr was spreading in the Auckland district, and asking the Council to do all in their power to check its growth on the public roads under then control. It was agreed that the foreman of streets and works be instructed to take the necessary steps to give effect to this request. Finance: Tho financial statement read by tho treasurer showed a debit balance of £310 lis 2d. Water Supply: Mr. W. Morton forwarded the resolution re water supply passed at the public meeting' held on the 15th inst. The letter was received. New Rate: In accordance with' notice previously given, it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, "That a general rate of Is in the £ be struck and levied on all the ratable property in the borough." Notice of Motion: Mr. Shaldrick gave notice to move at next meeting,_ " That if the School Board agreo the quarried stone now being removed from the new school site be accepted, and removed to the reserve near Norman's Hill." :. ■
