CO. i In the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waihi, the water has I been pumped out of the No. 5 level, and the - ieef crosscutted for 14ft. The water is not ; flowing so freely as before. The south-east crosscut has attained a length of 250 ft. In - the Waihi West section the "C" shaft is 1 down 287 ft. BUNKER'S HILL G.M. CO. 5 In the Bunker's Hill Gold Mining Com- ' pany's mine, at Coromandel, from both faces, 1 above and below the No. 2 level, where ' operations are in progress upon the No. 1 reef, strong dabs and blotches of gold con--1 tinue to be seen in the ore broken down. PROGRESS-CASTLE ROCK G.M. CO. In the Progress-Castle Rock Gold Mining ' Company's mine, at Coromandel, a start has been made with the leading stope over the bottom level drive, northwards from stopes on Reynolds' reef, in the Matawai section. ' The lode is about Ift wide, is well defined, and highly mineralised. Gold was seen in breaking down. The quartz stacked at the mouth of the Matawai drive has now all been sent down to the battery. Since crushing was started on the sth ins't., the battery has been kept running with one shift. TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED G.M. CO. (LIMITED). The following report on the operations in the Talisman Consolidated Gold Mining Company's mine, at Karangahake, for four weeks ended March 6, is furnished by Messrs. Bewick, . Moreing, and Co.: Talisman Reef: The rise at No. 4 level, mentioned in last report, has been connected with the winze from the No. 3 level. Stoping operations have been commenced on the reef, which is from 2ft to 4ft in width. The ore won, though of low grade, is payable and easily won. The south crosscut for the Dubbo reef has been extended a total distance of 240 ft, and a reef formation, 2ft in width, with well-defined walls, has been met with. As.it is traversing the same course as the Dubbo reef,' and dipping to the westward, it will probably prove to be that ore body. We are now driving southward to pick up the same shoot of ore that has been met in the No. 2 level, Dubbo section. "The" work done in No. 5 level since the battery was closed down has been confined to taking out a leading stope, and timbering up the drives preparatory to commencing stoping operations on the reef northwards. The south drive at No. 6 level has been discontinued for the present owing to poor ventilation. A winze has been commenced from the No. 5 level, which will ventilate this level, and also open up a large section of the reef for stoping purposes. The country in the present face of ' No. 7 level is broken, and a crosscut is now ! being put in to the eastward to pick up the reef in the Talisman section, north. The leading stope is being taken out, and the drive timbered up. The reef here is 7ft in width, and the ore of payable nature. The crosscutting adit at No. 8 level has reached a total length of 440 ft. During the past four weeks a hard bar was met with and passed through, but there is a i marked improvement' in the present face, which should enable the contractors to make better headway. Dubbo Reef (Bonanza section): No. 1 level has been extended 15ft, making the total distance driven 375 ft. The northern boundary has now been reached. The rise above this level is now up a total height of 74ft. The reef at this point is 2ft'6in in width, and is encased in a good class of country. A chamber has been cut at a point 270 ft north of the No. 1 winze, and the necessary timber is being placed in position in readiness for sinking a winze to connect with the rise going up from the' No. 2 level. A level which has been started from the surface, 74ft above the No. 1 level, has been carried along for 83ft on the reef northwards. This level will open up a substantial block for stoping, affording 100 ft of backs to the surface, and will connect with the rise from the No. 1 level. The reef at present averages 4ft in width, and the quartz is being placed in the paddock in readiness for treatment. The new crosscut to intersect the No. 2 reef has been extended 104 ft, making a total of 239 ft. The country in the face is a favourable class of brown andesite, intermixed with quartz veins. The reef should be intersected after another 25ft of driving.- The present face at No. 2 level is in a total distance of 660 ft north of the crosscut. The country at this point is a good class of andesite, and easy working ground. A rise has been started on the reef 50ft south of the face. The reef, which is 4ft wide, has a kindly appearance' and, general samples are being tested today. Talisman Extended : The north face in the No. 3 level has been extended 42ft, making a total of 227 ft. A manganese seam has come in from the western wall, and cut off the reef formation. It has taken the direct course of the reef, and we are now driving to ascertain if the reef makes again. This driving will test the lower levels in the vicinity of the No. 1 workings, where rich ore was obtained when operations were commenced on that section of the company's property. The excavating for the new hopper at the mill site is completed, and the timber is now being carted on to the ground, and the- work of erection will be commenced shortly. The No. 2 hopper, at the No. 8 level, is in course of erection, and the work of excavating for the hopper Jit the No. 7 level is well underway. The dry-crushing plant has been finally closed clown and preparations are being made for the fitting of agitators within the cyani'de vats on the machine site. The erection of the building, hoppers, stamp-framing, and vat-stands, is now nearly completed. The erection of shafting and of the steam-power plant is making good progress, and the steelvats are being rivetted up in position : and generally, the work is making very satisfactory progress. 6 ' lt/

MAY QUEEN EXTENDED.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Thames, Monday. Operations in. this company's mine "are still being , confined to stoping the block opened up on the Hokianga reef, at the low level, and during last week a very fair class of ore was won from No. 2 stope eastward of the rise. In this stope close upon 2£ft of crushing dirt of a somewhat rubbly character is being von, and although very little gold is seen, still It shows for a better return at the battery than the ore obtained Lorn the stones westward of the rise does, at which point gold has been seen freely of late. , Crushing is still proceeding on the company's behalf, but no general clean-™ has yet taken place. NEW WHAIL [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . ■ . ■ - Thames, Monday. The last breaking down of the hangingwall leader, in the rise above No. 1 level,> resulted lin strong colours of gold being freely seen in the quartz, and the leader generally looked very promising. A stope has now been started westward on the leader. The main reef above No. 2 level is slightly disturbed by a break that was recently met with, but the quartz looks very promising, and carries nice mineral indications for gold. Eight loads of ore from the hangingwall leader have been conveyed to the May Queen Extended Company's batttry, and two other loads will probably be sent down in a day or two. Crushing is expected to be commenced on Wednesday.
