TRADE WITH SOUTH AFRICA.
[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. A petition was presented to the Premier this morning from the South Island mercantile men, praying that the Government assist in the development of trade with South Africa. The Premier expressed sympathy with the petition. He said several communications had been received from firms willing to lay on steamers. He was now in communication with the Shaw, Savill and New Zealand Companies, and Tyser lines, asking them to quote rates of freight, and further action depended on their answer.
