VOLUNTEERING NEWS.

VICTORIA RIFLES SHOOTING COMPETITION. On Saturday afternoon the A ictoria Rifles competed for prizes presented by the Hon. T. Thompson, and Mr. "Wallace, of Karanga.hape Road. Mr. Thompson's prize is for first-class shots, the highest aggregato scorer in two matches to bo the winner. Lieutenant Cox finislied first, with 64- out of a possible 70 Mr. Wallace's trophy is for second-ciass shots, and W. Rowe in leading, _with 54, 111cluding a handicap oi: four points. iiotli trophies will have to bo fired for once more to decide the vinners. About 12 mcmbers in each class took part, and the following are the highest scores: —

AKARANA RIFLE CLUB. At the Avondale Range on Saturday after110on competitious werø fired by the membors of the Åkarana Rifle Club for two gold medals, presented by Mr. G. Road and Mr. E. T. Buchanan, for, A and B elass shots respectively. The weather was perfeet for shocfcing, and though a slight wincl \vas wowins' it had no éffect upon the firing, which was of a most satjofactory kind. Several excellent- scores were reeorded, tho average of the 13 highest totals being three points over inners. The A class competition was won by Mr. J. D. Webster, with an aggregate of SO points, Mr. J. G. Buchanan being seoond, with 89. The B class prize went to Mr. W. Cox, whose excellerit total of 90 reads a little bettcr than the Smilar aggregate put Mr. A. Stea cl, «hose score includes the nno performance of tho highest possible tit 500yds. In addition to the scores given, a visitor to the range, Mr. Salmon, succeeded in putting up tho possible of 35 at tho 500yds, and finished tho three _ ranges with the pplendid agf/regate of 96 points. At the couclusion of the competitious _ the second match, for the New Zealand Rifle Associabronze medal, was fired. and rosulted in a win for Mr, Melntosh.
