When the Indian troopers were passing . through Palmerston a local clergyman protested against the breach of Lord's Day. committed in connection with that now celebrated occasion. The protest was repeated in several synodical conventions. The Rev. Kennedy Elliott, a well-known Wellington clergyman, sent a protest in writing to the Premier. He has received the following re:—"Premier's Office, Wellington, March 7, 1901. Rev. Sir, —Respect for the position you hold and ordinary courtesy demand that I should acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th tilt., and I accordingly do so.—l am, yours faithfully, R. J. Seddon." ■ POLICE PENSIONS. Ex-Sergeant Mulville, long and favourably foiown in Auckland, retires on a pension of £91 5s a year. Constable Coolahan also retires upon a pension of £58 8s a year. ARBITRATION COURT. , The coal dealers of Wellington have given notice to the clerk of awards that they will not accept the decision of the Conciliation Board, filed on February 21 last. The remonstrants include the principal employers of Wellington, and are headed by Messrs. Sam. Brown, John Saunders, and i 8 others.
