TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. THIRD DAT. The Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting was brought to a close yesterday afternoon with the third day's racing, the weather being beautifully fine and the attendance good. The races throughout were run well to advertised time, and a word of praise is due to the secretary, Mr. R. Wynyard, and his fellow officials for the manner in which the arrangements were carried out. A sum of £5678 was passed through the totalizators on the eight events figuring on the programme, bringing the total investments for the three clays up to £25,914. Luncheon was provided in the dining-room under the grandstand, by Mr. A. F. Stilwell, and a pleasing musical programme was contributed by Impey's Brass Band. THE RACING. The card opened with the Marine Handicap, Bona Rosa being the one most fancied in a field of seven starters. The favourite made the running throughout, but had all her work cut out to beat off a determined challenge on the part of Jessamine in the run up the straight. The good field of 11 sported silk in the Borough Handicap, Lady Avon being the one to carry most money. The favourite was first into prominence, and setting the pace right through the piece, she was still well clear of the field when the straight was reached. Tiki came with a. great rattle in the last few strides, and Lady Avon had to be ridden right out under pressure to stall off defeat; the judge's verdict being a long head.
The eight coloured on the card went to the post for the principal race of the day, the Summer Handicap, Ro?ella being served up as the strong tip for the mile race, while Cavaliero was also well supported on the machine. When the barrier was released Cavaliero and Yolee were quickly into their stride, and they stayed at- the head of affairs for about half a-mile, when Cavahero was seen to be beaten, and the favourite made a forward move, going into third place. A furlong further on Rosella was at Volte's girths, and. having a bit the best of it when they settled down for the run up the. straight, the daughter of Seaton Delaval had no difficulty in holding off the opposition and winning without the whip, by a couple of lengths from Volee.
The top weight, Voltitjeur 11., was the only withdrawal from, the Hurdle Race, which was contested by a field of seven starters. Tim being made favourite on the totalisator. The public again proved correct in their judgment, as the son of Woolbroker was always with the front division, and, taking command just after the home circuit was entered upon, he cleared the last two fences in good style, running in a winner by a length and a-half from Forty-seven, who made a determined but fruitiest effort to draw up. Seven liliputians faced the barrier when the Third Pony Handicap came up for disposal. Ivan was served up a warm favourite, and Lady Avon, on the strength of her success in the Borough Handicap, also cair,o in for a large measure of support. The favourite, however, had to strike his colours to First Whisper, who jumped off in front on the dismissal of the field, and was nev-r caught, winning- by a couple of lengths from Ivan.
Half-a-dozen went to the post for the Devonport Handicap of five furlongs. Hastings car'ying the most money. Delia Rose got well away, and flattered the hopes of her admirers till the last furlong ' came to be covered, when the favourite moved up. and, catching the leader and Moment, who wa# racing on her quarters, fought it out in the straight, and defeated the latter by about three-parts of a lejjgth. The Second Handicap Steeplechase attracted four contestants, Voltigeur 11. going to the post a warm favourite, while Straybird was also given a chance. Shortly after the field moved away the favourite ran into the head of affairs, and maintained a commanding lead throughout. The consistent old son of Lionel, though tackled by Tarrigan when the last three-quarters of a mile came to be covered, drew away at the second fence from home, and landing safely over the la.it obstacle passed the post five lengths to the good of Turrigan, thus placing to his credit three jumping events for the meeting. On returning to the scale the popularity of the win was evident by one of those demonstrations which always greet a consistent horse.
The day's sport concluded with the disposal of the Welter Handicap, for which a field of 10 wont to the post. R-egnlus was made favourite, but was never prominent at any stage of the journey. Blaircarrig accounted for the pace, but when the field opened out in the straight for the run home. there was little to choose between the placed division and Voice. A great struggle to the post resulted in Corvette snatching a victory by a short head, while Blaircarrig was only a nose behind St. Ona. The winner rewarded her supporters with the respective dividends of £54 6s and £51. Appended are the details of the racing: — MARINE HANDICAP of 75sovs: second horse to receive lOsovs ont of stakes. Holding her own through the top stretch and turn, she was still well clear of the field when the straight was entered, but in the run from the distance she had all her work cut out to stave off a challenge on the part of Jessamine, who was on the inside, and succeeded in getting to within half-a-length of the St. Hippo filly as they dashed past the post. Running past the stand Cavaliero and Voice were still together in the van, two lengths clear of Rosella and St. Ursula, the others bunched, well up, and the order maintained going out of the straight and through the bottom turn. In the run across the back Regalia 11. closed up into third place, and a few strides further on Cavaliero was seen to bo beaten, as he began to fall back, leaving Voice in command, with Regalia 11. a length away, and Rosella next in order. Going through the top stretch Rosella improved her po-
sition, and she was within hali-a-length of Volee going through the home turn. Once heads were turned into the straight, she was upsides, and, drawing out in the run home, the daughter of Seat-on Delaval scored without a whip by a couple of lengths from Toke, who was a length in front of Regalia. Holding his own through Ihe bottom turn, Hylas ran up to the third jump two lengths clear of Tim, who was in turn three lengths to the good of Rangatira- and Forty-seven, with Miss Drury close up fifth. This order maintained across the top stretch and through the home turn, and Hylas was still showing the way as they negotiate') the next hurdle, and ran down past the stand, where it was seen that Tim had close,! up to within a length of the leader. Jumping the fifth hurdle almost on terms with Hylas, Tim went to the front going through the bottom turn, where Forty-seven ran up into second place. Forty-seven and Tim cleared the fence at the back of the course together, but the former drawing out a bit going across the top stretch and through the home turn, was quickest to the last hurdle, and. making no mistakes, the Woolbroker gelding held his own in the run to the post, winning by the best part of a length and ahalf from Forty-seven, who was about three lengths clear of Miss Drury in third place. Hylas was fourth, Clyde fifth, Rangaitira sixth, ami Adam last. Time, 3m. 24 3-ss. Totalisator, 1111. Dividends: Inside, £2 12s; outside, £3 3s.

Moment drew up to the leader's girth just as they entered the home turn, and the field bunching up in the run to the straight, there was little in it when they settled down for the run home, Hastings and Moment having perhaps just a bit the best of it. As they bowled down the hill to the water-jump there was nothing between the trio, but Voltigeur 11. being quickest to land, showed the way round the back, and was still a length clear of Straybird when they ascended the hill the second time, the other two a couple of lengths away together. As they emerged from behind the stand it was seen that Voltigeur H. had improved his advantage to a matter of three lengths, and fencing in great style, the old fellow was still well clear of the opposition as he made his way over the water-jump and set out for the journey on the flat, Tarrigan being a couple of lengths away from Straybird, -in third place, and Kowhai last. Straybird closed up a bit going across the back, but Voltigeur 11. had once more placed a matter of three lengths between himself and The Wanderer gelding when the foot of the hill was reached for the last time. Fencing grandly, the gray was still having all the best of it at the fences on the hill, but when they ran down to the water-jump Tarrigan had got to within two lengths of the leader. All efforts to reach Voltigeur 11. were, however, unavailing, as he easily held his own in the run home, taking the last fence well clear of Tarrigan, and running in a winner by five lengths: Straybird, 10 lengths away, third. Kowhai came in with the crowd. Time, 6m. 355. Totalisator, 847. Dividends: Inside, £1 17s; outside, £1 17s.

Holding his own throughout the bottom turn, Blairearrig was holding his advantage from Knight of Athol, but as they made their way across the top stretch Knight of Athol was almost on terms, and then a few strides further on Black Rose drew up to the leading division, while Regulus also improved his position. The field bunched up in the straight.and 50yds from the post half-a-dozen were in it, and as they flashed past the box it was difficult to say what had won. When the judge's decision was made known it was in favour of Corvette, by a short head from Blairoarrig, who was separated by a similar margin from St. Ona. Volee, Knight of Athol, Regalia 11., and Black Rose all finished together, right upon the, placed division. No time taken. Totalisator, 1337. Dividends: Inside, £51; outside, £54 6s.
