PERSONAL ITEMS.

The Hon. J. G. Ward will be occupied today on official business. Mr. Walter Hipgrave arrived from Sydney by the s.s. Zealandia yesterday. Captain J. P. Rolleston, of H.M.s.. Archer, is a cousin of the Hon. Wm. Rolleston. The Hon. T. Duncan and the on. J. McGowan leaves for Rotorua this morning. Sergeant Bernard, formerly of the Newton police station, is at present on a visit to Auckland. Mr. Justice Conolly left yesterday for New Plymouth, where he holds sittings of the Supreme Court. Among the officers of H.M.s. Archer is Chief Engineer J. Roffey. who was in H.M.s. Calliope when she steamed out of .Apia Harbour during the storm which wrecked the German warship Adler and other vessels. The Veil. Archdeacon Dudley, the Rev. W. Beatty, and the Rev. J. P. Cowie, who have been attending the Anglican General Synod at Napier, retained to Auckland yesterday by the Elingamite.

When visiting Christchurch a few days ago Mr. J. S. Gordon, recently appointed manager of the Union Bank at Ashburton, ■was the recipient of a handsome present from the Christ-church staff. The gift, which was a smoker's companion, containing four briar■wood pipes, with changeable mouthpieces, a silver match-box, cigar and cigarette-hold- ' ers, was presented to him by the manager, and shows the esteem in which he was held when accountant and sub-manager in the Christchurch branch. By the; steamer Westralia, which reached Melbourne on February 11, Dr. Pi en ton 1 and Dr. MacFarland, returned from their angling tour in New Zealand. Their tour was marked with much success, and they took back with them some remarkably fine specimens of New Zealand trout caught by them at the mouth of the Waiau River. By request of - the passengers, Dr. .Rentoul preached on Sunday, February 10, in the saloon of the Westralia. Amongst the audience were some of the invalided soldiers, -who had reached Hobart the day previously by the steamer Karamea,.from South AfricU. During his.. sermon the Professor referred impressively to the late Queen, and to the loss the nation had suffered by her death.
