VICTORIA.
.. TO THIS EDITOR. .v. ; * Sir,' Victoria, by, the grace of God, Queon of the British Empire, and noble ■woman—as it was at the beginning of her reign,, so it was at the close still Victoria by the grace of God, and though as a nation we must mourn her loss, still our sorrow must -be lightened by the recollection that she left us as we have known her; Victoria, in name ana deed, by the grace of God, and by that same grace called away in , the fulness of years and honour, with the glory of her great reign undimmcd by mental or physical failure. And now out of the depth of our love and respect for the great Queen and good woman, whose name has been a household word with most of us from our cradles, we shall soon be seeking in many ways to honour Slier memory. Would it not be something for us to be proud of if we could direct all the love and energy which will be so freely shown in connection with the name' of the world's greatest Queen into some one undertaking of a national character, a memorial of worldwide significance, instead of merely a scries of small local'efforts. Canada has struck the right keynote, and "Victoria Day" will for. centuries, J believe, be observed and remembered with reverence by Englishmen. In the field of battle New Zealand's sons have proved themselves not behind their brethrenof the Mother Country in resource and devotion to their country. May not, perhaps, some of those who have been left at home e able to do honour for their country and to themselves by guiding the overflowing 'love and. devotion of a nation into such a channel as will result in _ the establishment of a monument which will' perpetuate the glory of Victoria's reign long after marble and brass shall' have crumbled ; away, j I leave the suggestion in your hands, knowing full well that if you think it can bo acted on in any way to commemorate the memory of England's greatest Sovereign, ; that you will not be-slow to use it.'— unvote., • - 11.I 1 .
