POPULATION STATISTICS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ; Wellington, Thursday. The population of the colony on December 31 : was estimated at 810,536, inclusive •of 39,854 Maoris. / At the end oi 1899 the estimated population, exclusive of Maoris, was 756,505. The births registered during 1900 numbered 19,546, and the deaths 7200, leaving an increase, according to vital statistics,: of 12,346. ■ :. --;.,':, / ' , The arrivals in the coiony during the year were 18,074, and the departures -16,243, leaving a balance of 1831. , The total increase was accordingly 14,177, which, with the Maori population as at the census of 18&6, makes the population of the colony 810.536. .:.,.; The number of Chinese in the colony is estimated at 3077, including 34 females. The increase in the population during the year has been at the rate of 1.87 per cent. ; A comparison of the-births, deaths, and marriage rates for the colony for the hist three years is as .follows : — "Birth's: 1898, 25.74 per 1000 ; 1899, 25.12 per 1000; 1900, 25.60 per 1000. Deaths: 1898, 9.84 per 1000 ; 1899. 10.24 per 1000; 1900, 9.43 per 1000.. . Marriages: 1898. 6.91 per 1000; 1899, -7.28 per 1000; 1900/7.66 per 1000. ' The figures for the year 1900 are subject to revision.
