RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUE.
TO THE EDITOR. . Sir, —At last night's meeting of the City Council the request of a number of influen-, tial ratepayers that every ratepayer, at. the /■■> expense of tho Council, should-be supplied with information as to what rates he would have to pay under rating on unimproved, or land rating, wan not granted. I should like to ask how is this ? ; The large majority of ratepayers in this city would, under the proposed rating, much less than .they do at present, why 'should they r not be placed in possession of, the definite information so that when the poll is shortly taken they may know exactly what they are doing? Is the reason, that the bulk of the city councillors will, ,under, tho new rating, have .to pay more than they do at present, I and by their votes last night were sacrificing - a the majority of tho ratepayers for the beneI fit of their own pockets 1 Is it the same old game, rulers ruling to their own advantage without any consideration for the majority, and yet they most of them, I expect, call themselves Liberals?— am, etc., Auckland, January 29, 1901.
