The directors of the Welcome Jack Gold Mining Company have let a contract for the cartage of their battery from Mercury Bay, where it has been awaiting transport for some time, to the site at the mine. It is intended to proceed with the erection of the plant without delay, and it is anticipated that it will be working in three months' time. This is a very satisfactory outcome of the development of the Gumtown block, and the district will no doubt receive an impetus from the fact of the new battery being star-, ted. In the mine the reef is still being driven upon with encouraging results, and ; it is stated that there is a large quantity of j ore in sight of considerable value. | THAMES SHAREMARKET. MAY QUEEN EXTENDED G.M. CO. [FROM our own CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. Very little ore has been broken from the Hokianga reef in the May Queen Extended Gold Mining Company's mine during the past week, as the majority of the staff were engaged in timbering up the drive eastward from the rise, and preparing the block of ground opened up from that point for stoping. This work is expected to be completed some time on Monday, when there will be a, block about 50ft in length available for stoping purposes. Two men only have been employed this week in the leading stope from the eastern end of the rise, but only one breaking down of quartz took place, the rest of the time having been taken up in stripping the reef, which varies from 18m to 2ft in thickness. Nice strong colours of goldwere then seen, and the reef generally looked i well, the mineral indications being of an excellent, character. The reef also looks remarkably well in the roof of the drive at the extreme eastern end of the block, where j the men have been engaged timbering this week. When the drive was first driven along, the reef was somewhat broken at that point, and did not look any too well, but as the result of breaking away a. portion of the roof of the drive, in order to make room for the sets of timber, a great improvement has been noticeable in the reef at the point in question, which has been the main reason for the manager continuing this week the timbering of the drive instead of paying more attention to stoping operations. Crushing has been carried on during the week on behalf of the company, but as the ore is of a rather hard nature, and only eight-hour shifts are being worked at the battery, the quantity treated has not been very large.

NEW FOUR-IN-HAND G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH- — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Coromandel, Saturday. ' Operations in the New Four-in-Hand Gold Mining Company's mine have been continued since the holidays, and a most excellent start has been made for the new year. The reef has now broadened out at the face, and covers a width of 6ft of quartz. The whole of this carries gold, but some of the selected stone has been proved to be of exceptional richness. The quartz carrying the rich gold may be described as small boulders. Forty pounds of this class of stone were selected, and gave the handsome return of lOOoz of gold, valued approximately at £290, or £7 5s per lb weight of stone. The next cleaning up will cover a period of three weeks, and the return, Captain Holgate informs me, will be up to the average. ROYAL OAK G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Coromandel. Saturday. The development works in the Royal Oak Gold Mining Company's mine are being pushed ahead. Tenders are being called for a supply of mining timber. Although the weather has been wet for this season of the year, the water supply has been insufficient to drive the battery ; in fact, the rock drills have practically used up all the compressed air as supplied by the water-power. In the meantime, therefore, a considerable parcel of general ore of a lower grade is accumulating, which will be treated when the wet season returns. . DREDGING RETURNS. [BY TELEGRAPH.
