AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board was held in the Harboui
Board Room yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. H. Wjfchefqrti, M.H.R. (chairman), presided, and there were also present: Messrs. M. NJccol,*J. Thornes, J. Stichbury, A. R. Harris)- O. Dacre, J. C. Macky, J- T. Julian, W. J.W. Philson, 0. Grey, and A. Kidd. Mechanics' Bay: A letter from the engineer for railways was received, enclosing a plan showing the subdivision of the land in Mechanics' Bay, as arranged between the Board and the Minister for Railways. The plan. was approved of. Leave of Absence: Mr. W. J. Napier, M.H.R.,. was granted leave of absence for six weeks, upon his written application. Calliope Dock: Lengthy letters from Messrs. W. and A. MoArthur, re machinery, shear-legs, etc, for Calliope Dock, were received. ' . ■ Reduction of Rents: Messrs. J. J. Craig, W. and G. Winstone, Union Steamship Company, New Zealand Express Company,, and others, wrote asking for a reduction of rents. The letters were referred to the Works and Tariff Committee, Admiralty House: The secretary read a latter from Mr, R. Loweish, regarding the plans of Admiralty House, and enclosing an account amounting to £24* ss, alleged to be 1 due' to him by the Board for work done in connection with the proposed erection of the new house. On the motion of Mr. Niccol, it was decided not to entertain the claim. The secretary was. instructed to write to. Mr. Loweish, informing him that future correspondence must come through the Board's ■ solicitors. '" Wharfage '.Charges on Coal: The man ager of the ' Northern Steamship' Company 'wrote asking that.no charges should be made upon coal lying upon the wharf for the use 'df the company's steamers. . The letter was referred to the Wprksi and Tariff Committee. " : ■• , . Hobson-streefc Wharf: Letters were received from the manager of the Union Steamship Company, from Captain Lobb, of the s.s. Taierj, complaining of the obstruo tidns lying on the approach to the Hobsonstreet Wharf. The matter was referred to the consideration of the Works and Tariff Committee. ■ Railway Wharf: Mr. J. J.. Craig wrote stating that some of his premises had been damaged by the collapse of the wall at the Railway Wharf, and requesting the Board to make good the damage. The letter was remitted to the Works and Tariff Committee. The foreman of works reported that the reerection of the wall 'would cost £575, and that the collapse was due to faulty construction. .'•'■■ Footbridge at Birkenhead: Mr. W. J. W. Prison introduced a deputation from the Birkenhead Borough Council, consisting of Messrs. A. Bruce and P. Taylor, who asked that the Harbour Board should grant them the powei of protecting the bridge, rby givirfg the Birkenhead Borough Council and Waitemata County Council the control of the bridge in question. This was granted, on the understanding * that these Boards should maintain the structure, the agreement to be terminable at any time. Storage of Produce: On the motion of Mr. Dacre, the question of the covering of produce stored on the open wharf was referred to the .Works and Tariff Committee. :. V' Works and Tariff Committee's Report: The -following recommendations of the "Works and Tariff Committee were -adopted: '— (1) Explosives That vegetable oil be used in lamps; • that ports of hulk be protected; thatch' Rangitoto Domain Board be requested to consent to the ereolion of notice boards, prohibiting shooting in the neighbourhood of the hulk. (2) Gates, St. Beliers Wharf: That the necessary gates be erected, to be controlled by the Devonport Ferry Company, (3) Damage to wheel on wharf: That the claim be paid. (4) Water police That a copy of detailed statements as to the.recent robberies from yachts, etc., be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police. (5) Report of engineer for equipment of Calliope Dock, re foundation for shear-legs': That a copy of Mr. Metcalfe's plan and repeat be forwarded to. the Admiralty, directing their attention to the alteration of site, necessitated by the great of rock in the position originally proposed; that the Admiralty be requested to consent to the erection of the shear-legs and construction of deep-water berth in the new position indicated on plan, arid also to the readjustment of then annual contribution upon the basis of the actual cost of the works. ' Launch Electric Light Installation: Three tenders fo, the electric light installation for the launch were opened, but as all the, tenders were informal, it was decldted to call for fresh tenders. V Tift Board's Allotments: Mr. Dacre moved, and Mr. Nicco} seconded, "That the allotments between. Hobson and Nelson Streets, now occupied upon temporary tenancy, be let in lease by public auction, for a term expiring on December 16, 1917. Conditions of sale, draft lease, and upset price to be arranged by the Works and Tiii'iff Committee." The motion was lost.
