AUCKLAND SHAREMARKET. [ Business was rather more active on the Exchange yesterday. In investment lines Northern Steamships (contributing) sold at 7s 3d, sellers closing at 7s 6d, buyers 7s 2d. New South Wales Banks were looked for at £45, with sellers at £46 10s. In mining! lines there were sales in Broken Hills (Waiomo) at 4£d, more being offered at same price, buyers 4d. May Queen Extendeds were done at 8d and B|d, with further buyers at Bd, sellers 9d. For May: Queen Haurakis 7£d was bid, sellers lOd. In Upper Thames lines Chelmsfords maintained an upward tendency with sales at 3s Id and 3s 2d, sellers closing at 3s 2d, with buyers still offering 3s Id. There was business done in Komata Reefs at 3s, 3s Id, and 2s lid, late sellers asking 3s Id, with buyers at >2s lOd. Maratotos changed hands at 5Jd and 6d, with more lines offered at latter price, buyers 4id. Talisman C'onsolidateds sold at 235, with further sellers quoting at same price, buyers 22s 6d. Waihi Consols had sale at lid, more being bid for at that price, sellers holding for Is. Waihi Extend eds eased slightly, with business at 4s 9d, sellers closing at 4s lid, buyers 4s 9d. Waihi Souths changed hands at Is sd, late sellers quoting at Is 7d, buyers Is 4d. Tairua Broken' Hills were offered at Is 6d, buyers Is 3d. Waihi Consolidateds were a shade easier at 2s 3d, buyers offering 2s. Waitekauris had buyers at 325, sellers 37s 6d. In Barrier lines Barrier Reefs sold at lis 6d, lis 9d, and lis 6d, with further inquiry at last price, sellers 12s. In Wliangamata lines there were sales in Whangamata Gold Corporations at 3s 5d and 3s 6d, late buyers offering 3s, sellers asking 4s. Late prices governed other stocks.
PROGRESS-CASTLE ROCK G.M. CO.
In the Progress-Castle Rock Gold Mining Company's mine, at Coromandel, operations have been continued on Reynolds' reef, above the bottom level, in the Matawai section. The third stope is being squared up over the drive in the north end, and a start has been made with the main rise, and when a few feet have been risen the next stope will be commenced In breaking down, the ore showed strong blotches of gold, and in both places the reef showed no material alteration from its former appearance.
WAIHI EXTENDED G.M. CO. Sinking was resumed at the Waihi Extended Gold Mining Company's mine, oil 3rd inst. A stoppage was necessitated on tlio 7th inst., in order to make preparations for putting the Tangye pump in tho shaft. This work litis been in hand during the past week, and will not be completed for a few more days, having taken longer than was anticipated. The manager, however, expects to bo able to resume sinking operations again on 17th inst., when the work will be pushed on with vigour. THAMES TALISMAN G.M. CO. The contractors have advanced the low level drive in the Thames Talisman Gold Mining Company's mine, at Thames, a further distance of 26ft-.for the week, total frojn mouth of tunnel 756 ft. The present contract will be completed after a further distance of 4ft. The drive is still in a good class of sandstone. WAIHI CONSOLS G.M. CO. In the Waihi Consols Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waihi, the drive into the Martha Hill lias been extended 6ffc since the resumption of operations after the holidays. The country is still mineralised us formerly. The bore-liole is down 187 ft iu the same class of country, but much hauler for the last few feet. The manager anticipates an early change for the better. HAURAKI No. 2 G.M. CO. Operations in the Hauraki No. 2 Gold Mining Company's mine, at Coromandel, were resumed on the 7th inst. The country has been hard and the leader split. This is expected to come together again in the next few feet of driving, as the hard bar of country has been passed through. The stone looks well for gold-bearing. The drive is in 17ft from the winze. CHELMSFORD G.M. CO. At a meeting of directors of the Chelmsford Gold Mining Company, held in the office of the secretary, Mr. A. L. White, yesterday, arrangements were made for Mr. H. Frank Shepherd to take full chargo of the company's property at Upper Tairua, on February 1. BUNKER'S HILL G.M. CO. In the Bunker's Hill Gold Mining Company's mine, at Coromandel, No. 2 stope, on No. 1 reef, hat, been advanced to the boundary. Nice colours of gold were obtained in the No. 4 stope, and the quartz has a promising appearance in the other stupes. Sinking has been commenced on the reef from No. 2 level, where good gold was got under the rise. TA LISMA N CONSO LID AT (LIMITED). Messrs. Bewick, Moreing, and Co. furnish the following report on the operations at the Talisman Consolidated Gold Mining Company's property, at Karangahake, for the four weeks ended January 11, 1901 : — Mining operations : At No. 3 level, Talisman section, the work of sinking the winze has been discontinued for the present, and a rise will shortly be commenced from the No. 4 level to make a connection. At No. 3 level, Bonanza section, stuping on the short shoot of ore above the level is being continued with payable results. The No. 4 level crosscut, now in a total distance of 260 ft, to intersect the Dubbo reef, has been penetrating hard country for the last 20ft. 'At No. 5 level, south, the stones have been carried on. The ore-body is from 3ft to 7ft in thickness, and a large tonnage of ore has been won and sent to the mill for treatment. At No. 6 level the south drive lias been extended. the total distance driven to date being 285 ft. The reef iti the present face is 2ft 6in in width, and the ore payable. At No. 7 level, south drive, on the course of the lode, we have driven 25ft, and the reef, which has opened out to 2ft in width, is encased in a good description of country. The ore has been of a- payable, nature for the last 10ft, and an improvement may be expected as we get further southwards. The tot al length of the tunnel, at No. 8 level,
has now reached 310 ft, and the contractors are still making good headway. The No. 1 hopper has been erected, and the work of excavating for the No. 2 hopper is finished. At No. 1 level the drive going north on the Dubbo reef has been extended 16ft, making a total of 360 ft. The reef formation at this point is -1 ft wide, and some highly satisfactory assay results have been obtained. At No. 2 level the driv going north on the same reef has advanced 15ft. The total distance driven north of the main crosscut is now 473 ft. The country in the face has been exceptionally hard of late, but there am indications of a change and a more favourable class of country should be met with shortly. The No. 1 rise from this level is up 83ft, and will at an early date be connected with the surface drive. A
new crosscut to intersect the No. 2 reef, west of the Dubbo workings, has been commenced. and driven 20ft. This work is being pushed ahead with three shifts of men in a favourable class of country. The drive going north on th;- Talisman reef formation, in the No. 3 level, has advanced 22ft, making the total distance driven in this direction. 132 ft. The country at present is of a favourable nature, and the ground easy to work. All the ground and aerial tramways arc in first-class working order. During December the stamps worked 17 days 17 hours 55 minutes, and crushed 424 tons of ore, the duty per stamp being 1 19 tons per diem. During the same month the Krupp mill crushed 236 tons of ore, and worked or 18 days 1 hour and 30 minutes, the daily output being 13.06 tons. The clean-up for December, after treatment of 612 tons of ore, resulted in a yield of 16580z wt of bullion, valued at- £1222 10s. Crushing operations were suspended from December 22 to January 6, .owing to the Christmas holidays. All the requisite repairs were done to the machinery and plant during the holidays. The whole of the framework of the building for the new mill, including the cyanide shed, has now been erected, "and the greater part covered with corrugated iron. The erection of stamp and hopper framing is making satisfactory progress, and the stands for vats are also in course of erection. Foundations for the engine and boilers are being prepared. A
contract is about to be let for the conversion, of the cyanide plant on the old machine site into an agitation plant for treatment of slimes, and this work will be put in hand at an early date. The work generally Is making very good progress.
TARARU CREEK G.M. CO. [by TELEGRAPH. —OWN correspondent.] , Thames, Tuesday. The return showing the value of bullion won by this company for ,the crushing operations conducted on its behalf during the months of November and December last was as follows: mill ran 946 hours, and crushed 2150 tons of ore, for a return-of 3090z 9dwt of gold, won by amalgamation, valued at £971 17s 2d. The cyanide plant treated 1620 tons of tailings, the product of the abovementioned ore, for 201oz 14dwt of bullion, valued at £330 5s Bd. The value of slags on hand amounts to £15, making a total productive value for the period stated of £1317 2s lOd. The expenditure incurred in mining, milling, and cyaniding the ore amounted to the sum of £1753 5s lOd, whilst a further sum of £457 5s 6d was spent in development work, thus making a total expenditure of £2210 lis 4d. The company's total output of bullion for the year 1900 was valued as follows: —The battery crushed 14,749 tons of ore for 25010z 18dwt of gold, valued at £7747 Is, and 11,980 tons of tailings were dealt with by the cyanide process for a yield of 32500z ldwt of bullion, valued at £4698 17s Id, making a total value for the year (if £12,445 18s Id. ihe total expenditure incurred in mining, milling, and cyaniding the ore, including development work, etc., was £17,219 Is 6d. The company's total output to date is as follows:—Ore milled, 40,143 tons; yield of gold, 877707. 7dwt, value £26,759 4s Id. Tailings cyanided, 28,022 tons; yield of bullion, 11,4500z 6dwt, value £13,646 2s 3d. Total value, , £40,405 6s 4d.
