SCARCITY OF LABOUR.

STATEMENT BY MR. WARD. [BY telegraph.—press ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. In reply to Mr. Friedlander, of Ashburton, complaining of the scarcity of manual labour, and suggesting that the co-operative works be stopped, as far as possible, Mr. Ward telegraphed : " Only some 700 men are eraployed by the Government in the South Island. Much as the Government are anxious to assist farmers in every way, the course suggested cannot at present be adopted. There is a universal demand for prosecution of the many public works in hand, the great majority of which are for the convenience of settlers. If stoppage in the direction indicated Were made, the attempted cure would be worse _ than the disease. The Government previously had some experience in the matter, and the course suggested, as then tried, did not work as was anticipated, but caused very general dissatisfaction."
