MINING AT KARANGAHAKE.

It will be seen from the summarised reports given elsewhere of recent meetings in London of the shareholders in the New Zealand Crown Mines (Limited) and the Talisman Consolidated companies, that additional plants for crushing are contemplated by both companies. The New Zealand Crown Mines (Limited) have now 60 head of stampers, and it is proposed to erect an additional 20 head, making a total of 80 stamps. The Talisman Consolidated Company, whose present crushing power of 20 head is now being added to by the erection of a further 50 head, also propose a still further addition of 30 head, so as to increase their milling,, capacity to 100 head of stampers. 'The directors of both \companies consider that they are warranted in these contemplated extensions of their plants from the developments in their separate mines. Taking into consideration the fact that the Woodstock Gold Mining Company have a 40-stamper battery, it will be seen that when all the plants are running to their full capacity there will be a total of 220 stampers engaged in crushing the ore product' of the Karangahake mines. This must of necessity have the effect of giving a great impetus to the mining industry in that district.

IMPERIAL G.M. CO. The extension of the level on the south course of the new Jreef in the Imperial Gold Mining Company's mine at Karangahake has made good progress djiring the past week, and the lode is now opened up for a length of 73ft. During the early part of the week a small break was met with at right angles to the drive. This slightly affected the reef, but at present the latter is a well-defined body of stone measuring 3ft 6in in width. It is composed of very kindly-looking ore, which gives coarse gold in the dish.

BROKEN HILL G.M. CO. Work has been resumed in the Broken Hill Gold Mining Company's mine at Waiomo. The lower level has since been driven a distance of 7ft through blue sandstone country—total 12ft, A permanent set. rails has also been laid, and two sets of timber have' been put in.

CHELMSFORD G.M. CO. At the Chelmsford Gold Mining Company's property at Upper Tairua work has been recommenced. Five extra hands have been taken on to complete the water-race and battery. No. 1 race is expected to be completed by the middle of the week, and other works are being pushed on speedily, with a view of the early completion of the battery and cyanide works.

NEW WHAU G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ( * Thames, Monday. Driving and rising is now in progress upon the new hangingwall leader at- No. 1 level, in the New Whau Gold Mining Company's mine. The total length opened up is about 22ft, and the rise, which has been commenced at the point where the leader was first intersected, is only up a height of, about 3ft. An excellent class of country encases the leader in both the drive and rise, the leader averaging about Bin in thickness, and carrying a most promising class of ore. . ' •

THE DRAINAGE DIFFICULTY. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday. At noon to-day the water had risen to a height of 41ft above the 500 ft level, in the old Big Pump shaft, whilst in. the Saxon section of the May "Queen Hauraki mine there were about 15in of water on the flat sheet at No. 6 level, and, 1 as a consequence, several parties of tributers, whose tribute blocks are situated at that level, were unable to proceed with their operations. It is feared that by the end of this week the level in question will be flooded, and that all the tributes working in the Saxon section will be thrown out of employment, for the main draught to'ventilate the workings is brought through the main crosscut at No. 6 level, and the flooding of that crosscut will cut all such ventilation off. DREDGING. [BY telegraph.— ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Monday. During the week ended to-day returns were reported from 22 dredges, the total gold yield being 5320z 9dwts 15gr, or an average of 240z pei dredge. DUNEDIN : STOCK EXCHANGE. [by TELEGRAPH.
