SCENERY CONSERVATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of tho committee of the Auckland Scenery Conservation Society was held yesterday in the City Council Chambers. Ihe Rev. Dr. Purchas presided, and there were also present; His Worship the Mayor, Mr. D. Goldio (president), Messrs. Burtt, Hay, Payton, Morton. Tibbs. Pond, Dr. Haines, and Mr. Percy Holt, C.E. (acting secretary). Mr. A. J. AHom's resignation of the offices of lion, secretary and treasurer, on account of ill-health, was accepted with great regret, and the acting-secretary was instructed to thank him for his past, services. Mr. W. Robsoii wrote, suggesting that tho society should encourage landowners and settlers to beautify thoir properties by planting trees and shrubs, by offering prizes for this purpose. A letter from Canon Walsh was received, concerning the destruction of pohutukawa trees on our coasts by excursionists lighting fires close to them. Some discussion took place on this subject, and the hope was expressed that the local newspapers would take the matter up, and endeavour to influence public opinion towards the preservation of these beautiful trees. A letter from the town clerk, concerning the society's suggestions for altering Breakwater Road, was referred to a subcommittee to see the Minister and ascertain the TJews of the Government on the matter. A letter was received from Mr. W. Parkineon announcing the arrival of a marble statue he is presenting to the society for erection in Albert Park. Referred to the Parks Si committee, to confer with tho Mayor, and have power to act. The appointment of a secretary was then considered, and, on the motion of the Mayor, Mr. Percy Holt, C.E., was requested to "act until after the February meeting. Mr. Holt consented. It, was then resolved that tho next meeting be le£d on the first Monday in February.
