THE ordinary monthly meeting of the Coun- ; cil was held on Thursday evening, when all • the members were present. In regard to a request from the local manager of the Bank of New Zealand that a (special resolution be passed making the debt to the- bank at March 31 last a liability for the current year, it was decided that the matter be left to the Finance Committee, several members thinking the course an unnecessary one. The Works Committee reported a scarcity of labour, and that no offers were forthcoming for clearing Albert-street. The was pleased to find that the Noxious Weeds Bill 1900, placed it within the powet of the Council to have all the streets cleared, and on their recommendation a resolution was passed that the necessary steps be taken to enforce the Act within the borough. The, financial statement showed the overdraft when accounts are paid, at £133 13s 7d. The Building Committee submitted a report in connection with the proposed now Council Chambers. The tenders first received were deemed too high, so the plans wore amended, and fresh tenders obtained: .1. R. McVarlane, £299; \v. Hogan, £257. The committee recommended that the latter be accepted, and a resolution to that effect was moved by Mr. Ferguson, and seconded by Mr. Carr. An amendment was moved by the Mayor, " That Mr. Russell's lease be terminated, and that . the borough offices be formed by repairing, and altering the building at a cost not to , exceed £60, and that £150 be spent on the outlying streets of the borough." This was seconded, and carried on the casting vote of ' the Mayor. Mr. D. W. McArthur, of Paeroa, wrote offering his services as engineer, to carry out the professional work connected with the water supply scheme for Cambridge. The Mayor said with iron at its present price, the works would cost £7500, whereas the amount of the loan authorised was but £COOO. Information had been obtained re the new asphaltura pipes, which cost £26 per ton. but would go four times sis far as the ordinary iron ones, and at (he same time a big saving in freight would be effected. Everyone was feeling the need fo. a water supply, and he moved that the several «r">]iontinns received from gentlemen willing to undertake the engineering duties be referred to the Works Committee, to report at the next meeting oi the Council. This was seconded, and carried unanimously.
