Wellington, Tuesday. A case, in which James Patterson, of New Plymouth, sued Edmondson and Dickerson, of Wellington, for £1000 damages for arrest under the Bankruptcy Act, came before the Chief .Justice to-day. The plaintiff did not appear, and was nonsuited, with £25 costs. Captain Watchlin, of the schooner Toroa. was prosecuted by the Customs Department to-day for carrying a deck load of 27,000 ft of timber from Tairua to Welling ton without a permit. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5 and costs. Westport, Tuesday. Applications for the position of matron of the Westport Hospital, were received from all over the colony at the meeting to-night. On the casting vote of the chairman, Miss Heyward, of Christchurch, was appointed to the position.
