to the editor. Sir,—Aucklandors are under a debt of gratitude to the Auckland Cycle Roads League for galvanising the City Council into life on this question. For three or four weeks Beach Road was a mass of shifting stones. A few days after the league's graphic communication was published the metal was covered with binding and rolled. The surface now is as smooth as can be desired. How long it will remain so will be seen. The large metal
. underneath must shift and move with the traffic, for it cannot be properly knit together, and before very long it will be in holes again. However, it is good to see some attempt at remedying the crying evils which exist in our city., I have heard it said that every man must eat his peck of dirt. It would be interesting to know how many pecks tho averago Parnellite, who uses Beach Road, consumes in a year. Now is the time to raise their voices and see that the abominable dustheaps which are apparently placed at stated intervals along the road for their edification are removed. Now they are mud pools and miniature bogs; soon they.will be whirling clouds of assorted bacteria and ammoniated organic matter.—l am, etc., : ROSSIGNOL. ; j - i
