WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S ! SPRING MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH. — ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. The Wellington Racing Club waa favoured with glorious weather for the opening day of thes pring meeting, and the gathering must rank as one of the most successful in the history of the club. There was a very large attendance of the public, and the course was in splendid order. The racing was of an exceptionally interesting character, and the public witnessed several hard-fought struggle* down the straight. The finish for the Wellington Handicap was particularly exciting, the three placed horses passing the post in a bunch, each separated only by a head. On entering the straight Tortulla appeared to have the race well in hand, but Skobeleff and Coeur-de-Lion, put in a determined challenge, and Jenkins had to shake up his mount in the last couple of hundred yards. The win was a popular one. The sura of £9994 was handled by the totalisators as compared with £8845 on the first day of last year's spring meeting. Materoa led past the stand, with Rubin next, Volley and Tortulla lying last. Passing the six-furlong post Rubin was in front, with Sirius, Oingo, and Materoa close up, Skobeleff being last. At the four-fur-long post Rubin was beaten, and Sirius was joined in the lead by Oingo, Coeur de Lion, and Tortulla lying next. Rounding the home bend Tortulla made a forward move, and passing the leaders, showed the way into the straight with a lead of three lengths from Cceur deLion, who was racing alongside Oingo. Half-way down the straight Skobeleff came with a great run, find Jenkins had to keep Tortulla going to stave off SkobeteiF and Coeur de Lion. After an exciting finish, Tortulla gained the verdict by a head, Cceur de Lion being a similar distance in front of Skobeleff. Volley was fourth, and Oingo fifth. Time, 2m. 10s. On the totalisator, 1643. Dividend, £5 13s.

[BY TELEGR,«*H. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] Corosiandei,, Thursday, For the second day of the races the weather was more favourable and the attendance was much better than on the first day. The whole of the events were well contested, especially the Goldfields Handicap, when Minerve and Nightingale ran neck and neck from start to finish. Alinerve winning by a nose. The Racing Club Handicap was also a splendid contest between Admiral Hawke and Hylas, the Admiral finally pulling off the race. The Welter Handicap brought out a large field and made a great race, the win of Mr. Phillips, with Knight of Athol, proving a most popular one, the old grey coming in for a general cheer from the spectators. There were only two tickets on the totalisator for the pony race, both on the winner, and the investor therefore scooped the pool, and thus got 18s for his £1 invested.
