WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[by TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. MINISTERIAL. The Premier is announced to go to Greymouth to-day, accompanied by Mrs. Seddon, in the Tutanekai. The Minister for Lands has left town to-day to attend the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Exhibition. JUDICIAL. It is the intention of the Government to appoint another stipendiary magistrate, part of whose duty it will be to relieve the magistrates during periods when magisterial business is exceptionally heavy. The proposal finds very general acceptance. COAL MINES COMMISSION. The proceedings of this inquiry will commence in a few days. The Commissioners are appointed, viz., Mi. Haselden, S.M., Messrs. J. Proud (a mine expert of Wanganui), and E. Lomax. The order ot reference comprises : (1) The manner in which tho mines are worked; (2) the output; (3) whether the mining operations have been carried out economically, and with benefit to the colony. THE DUKE OF YORK AND THE \ NATIVES. i The NgatiraAikawa and the Ngatitoa tribes, living between Porirua and Rangitikei, have forwarded a request to the Pre mier that the Duke and Duchess ot York might be induced to visit the West Coast of the North Island. They call themselves the most loyal of Her Majesty's native subjects for half a century. They would give their Royal Highnesses a thorough Maori welcome at Otaki, where they say the great Rauparaha is buried. THE POLYNESIAN ISLANDS. Tenders will be immediately called fiat the new vessel to trade to the Islands. She is to be 200 tons burden, and to have od engines of 66 horse-power. BREED OF STOCK. The Government have decided to send Mr. Gilruth to England to select and bring to the colony 12 thoroughbred horses of the Irish hunter type. The object is to encourage the breed of horses suitable for cavalry chargers. Mr. Gilruth is also instructed to select and bring tc the colony 12 shorthorn bulls, selected from high-bred herds, in which the milking strain is most conspicuous.,
FATAL ACCIDENT,
* [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Whangarei, Wednesday. Mr. - William Montague was killed at Whananaki by a log rolling over him yesterday. __________
