WEST TOKATEA. [by TELEGRAPH.—OW.V CORIiKSPONDENT.] Conoii an Dei., Wednesday. Mr. C. R. Walker, attorney for this company, has received confirmation by the I'risco mail of the purchase by the company of a compact crushing plant, suitable for the mine. According to advices the batteryis on its way, mid the site will at once be prepared in anticipation of its arrival.

MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. New Whan (Thames, Jul) 28): The No. 2 rise has attained an additional height of sft, and the men are at present engaged timbering it up. The reef is 20in wide in Ilia present face, and is vory heavily mineralised i gain. Nice white sandstone country of a gold-bearing nature is still encasing the reef, The first and second stopes from the No. 2 riso are being brought alone to the end of ground over the drive at the No. 2 levol, and in consequence of this work being iu progress, the extension of the drive at the No. 2 level is suspended. The third stope has attained a length of 2llft, and the fourth is along lift. The oro body at each of these faces looks very promising. I have only Wn able to cart 10 loads of quartz to the battery, as the road, after conveying this quantity, was cut into an impassable state. Crushing win be commenced on Monday next, the 30th inst., and as the battery is working two shifts tho clean-up ought to take place about Thursday next. Alpha iWaitekauri, July 28): The crosscut leading from the Alpha Reef at No. 4 level, with the object of intersecting the Oo'den Cross and No. 5 lodes, is still penetrating a tight section of country, the face having been advanced a further distance of lift. Tho total length of this crosscut is 801 ft, and according to a survey recently executed, there still remains a distance of 390 ft of driving to be accomplished before the downward continuation of the No. 5 reef should fa* to hand, at a point 190 ft lower than where operate., upon in the Rainbow section. When the lode referred to was under development, it averaged 3ft in thickness, and was responsible for £2 ore by assay, and I would judge by the indications that similar results will be met with at this level. Tho drive north on tho course of No. 4 reef is also advancing satisfactorily. The lode is shrinking in size, but this feature is always characteristic with lodes of an auriferous nature, and there is a proliability that when the lodo commences to swell to its usual dimensions, an improvement in the quality of the ore may accordingly be met with.

Hauraki No. 2 (Ooromandel, July 28): Sinc-c last report I started to rise on tlio leader, and put it up sft. which gives Bft of leader stripped. The leader ha« a good underlie to the east and the country' penetrated is of the very best description for gold-bearing, interlaced with mineral veins and seams. I broke the leader down to-day ; it is afmo looking leader, from 6in to Sin thick at top of rise; the stone is heavily mineralised and rusty, tjid owing to it beinq coated with mineral, 1 cannot see gold by breaking it. The stone, when pounded, give? excellent prospects of coarse gold, and very rich pieces can bo picked out of the dish, which shows that there is specimen stone in the ore. and according to prevent indications 1 believe I am close to a rich patch of gold. Kapowai (.Inly 28): ()n No. 2 reef bft of driving have been done since last report, making entire length of level 61ft. The reef has become somewhat smaller, but continues to show good gold. I tried it in several places to-dav. and ol>tft-ined stone carrying visible gold from each |>lnre. Some nice blue mineral \va« met with during the week. A good deal of water is also being encountered. The country has become much firmer in the last few feet of driving, but is of a more favourable nature for gold. The drive to cut No. 1 reef has been extended a further distance of lift, making total length 17ft. The ground is hard, and water is coining in pretty freely; a number of mineral seams are running across the face.

TREATMENT OF REFRACTORY ORES. TO THE EDITOH. Sir,--1 notice iii yotu To Aroha correspondent's report of my speech recently delivered there, and reported in your columns to-day, that lie mate me say that "the solution of the probloin of dealing with refractory ores had proved too much foi me." This is incorrect. I said that the examination and testing of the ores in bulk had proved their non-payable dimeter. As a matter of fact, there is no refractory ore in the North Island that cannot be profitably handled if it yields Jss nei ton, and can be cheaply mined.—l am, etc., JnfiKNl C:\UrBELI.
