ENTERTAINMENTS AND MEETINGS.

DIX'S GAIETY COMPANY. The City Hall was again well attended last evening, • when the enjoyable programme instituted on Saturday was again repeated with marked success. Out of respect for the late Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the orchestra played Chopin's "Funeral March," and concluded with the German Nations.! Anthem. On the riso of the curtain the company sang the National Anthem, in which the audience joined. Encores were demanded for every item. Mr. Hahn scored heavily with his song, " Asleep in the Deep," and later in the evening he was again heard to advantage, in conjunction with Miss Zesch, in "The Battle Eve." On Wednesday next the management announce the first, appearance of tho Elmore Sisters, serios and dancers, and Professor Davy's marionettes.

FULLER'S WAXWORKS. Crowded bouses continue to be the nightly rule at the Agricultural Hall, where .Messrs. John Fuller and Sons' Waxworks and Vaudeville Company have established themselves as popular entertainers. Last night's programme met with a hearty reception, and recalls followed nearly every item. The wellselected first-part, in which all the members of the company contributed items, concluded with the amusing sketch, "Tho Request." In the second half of the programme Mr. Martyn Ilagati and Miss Lucy Eraser's original musical sketch, "The 1-ady Barber," hit off tJie popular fancy to a nicety, and the binlesque dramatic sketch, " Melodraiuarna, in which Messrs. Wat kins and Stevens took part, was highly successful. On Saturday Miss Eva Wilson, who comes from Australia with a splendid reputation as a serio-comic artist, make; her first appearance in this city.

WOMEN'S DEMOCRATIC UNION. The usual meeting of the Women's Democratic Union was held 011 Tuesday evening, the president (Mrs. Kirkby) ill the chair. A communication was received from the National Council of the Women of New Zenland, requesting tho union to subscribe to the resolutions forwarded in connection with the treatment accorded to the Removal < f Women's Disabilities Bill in the House of Representatives. These resolutions, which have been published in the Hehalu, vore unanimously carried. It was also resolved, That owing to the recent disclosures at Stoke, it is the opinion of this meeting that honorary female visitors should he appointed to every cliaritalilc institution in the colony, the said visitors to inako frequent surprise visits, in order that the public may be quite sure the inmates are lioing treated properly.

ST. BENEDICT'S SOCIAL CUB. A most delightful dance was hold in St. Benedict's H:ifl last evening in connection with the St. Benedict's Social Club. Dancing was kept up till a Li to hour, the music hein,,' provided by Meredith's string kind, Messrs. 'I. McDermott, .1. Knott, and K. Noonan acting as M.C.'s. Mr. J. Callaghan's preparation of the floor was much appreciated, and some 20 items were indulged in. Mr. .lames Knott, the energetic secretary, whs. as usual, untiring in his efforts towards securing a pleasant evening for the 70 couples who were present. On Friday fortnight a social will be given in aid of the funds of the club.

NAVAL ARTILLERY SOCIAL. A very successful social was given last evening by the Auckland Naval Artillery Corps in St. fieorge's Hall, < Irey Lynn, idly 300 persons, members ol the corps and friends, were, present. The hall was gaily decorated with bunting and souvenirs of the corps, '.lie decorations, the uniforms of tho men, and the pretty frocks of the ladies all combining to form a brilliant and animated scene. Amongst those present were several old officers of the corps, including Captains Le Roy and Little, also Colonel White, the Rev. K. Ferguson (chaplain), Messrs. James Kirker and J. J. O'Brien Ipresidont of the Natives' Association). After Captain Clemens had welcomed tho guests on behalf of the corps, an enjoyable programme of songs was gouu through, including items by the following gentlemen: — Mr. Jensen, "Sons of the Empire;" Mr. Anderson, "The Doctor;" Mr. MeKonzie, "Ada's Serenade:" Mr. Endean, "Lads in Navy Blue:" Mr. Baxendell, "The Deathless Army;" Mr. Wigg, "The Arab's Farewell;" also, by Messrs. Norgrove and Whitteu, and a song, "Tiptoe," by Miss W'alstrom, a little lass of seven, whoso singing excited much admiration, .'t intervals ill the programme Colonel White (the office.!' commanding the First Auckland Battalion) and Mr. .1. ,1. O'Brien briefly addressed those present, congratulating the corps on its successful work. The badges and certificates won by members of the com* were then presented by Mr. James Kirkc, who, in addressing the corps, said it had a great deal to be proud of. It was founded in 1858, one of the first naval vounteer corps in the British Empire; three of their members had won the Imperial long service medal, while nine wore the New Zealand long service medal, and two the Royal Humane Society's medaJ. He wished to see them given every encouragement, for they might at 110 distant date be called 011 to render services to the Empire, such as the Naval Brigade had rendered at Ladysmith, and was glad to see the ladies encouraging the movement by their pteseucc that evening. The hall was afterwards cleared for dancing, which was kept up till a lair hour.

NEW HEBRIDES MISSIONARY/ ASSOCIATION. The annual mooting of the above association was held yesterday afternoon in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms. Thero was a large attendance, among the clergy present being the Revs. G. R. Monro, Hugh Kelly, W. (Jray Dixon, R F. Macniool, R. Sommerville, and T. F. Robertson. Mr, James Kirker presido<l, and in expressing his sympathy with the work rf the mission congratulated them on the fact that their membership had doubled since the advent of the association some 10 yoars ago. In concluding his remarks, the Chairman said it had boon brought under his notice that the work of sewing for the mission was done entirely by hand, and ho trusted thoy would a<Wpt a gift of a sewing mnchino from hun, and thus lessen their labour. (Applause 1 Mr. Ker then read the annual roport and balance-sheet for the year ending July 31, on Mrs. Ker's (the secretary) behalf. Tho report expressed regret nt the death of the honorary president, Mrs. A. Clark, sen., who was one of the first to inaugurate the association, and held the position of honorary president for the post nine years. Meetings have been hold regularly 011 the first Wednesday in every month, January and February excepted. The number of members has decreased from S2 to 91, and the average attendance litis tx'on 24 at each mooting. tin November 14 a mission box was packed and forwarded to the Rev. W. Watt, at Port Resolution, Tanna. It contained parcels from tho Mangore branch association, under Mrs. Maeilonald; the Tiuranga branch, under Mrs. Hondrick: and from Mrs. Worboy's Tiiblo class, Opotiki. The amount of material also sent by tho association made tho box a valuable one, and it was insured for £20.
