ORANGEISM AND POLITICS.
Just before the adjournment of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly tho other evening there was an angry scene. Tho Minister for Education and Labour (Mr. Perry) took an opportunity, on a motion for adjournment, to deny a statement made by Mi'. Jesscp at an Orange gathering, to the effect that, although present in the ball, he (Mr. Perry) was afraid to go on the platform. Mr. Perry " hurled back" tho charge or cowardice, and said his reason for not taking a seat on the platform was that whence arrived he found the gathering was being turned into a sort of political meeting. A member ejaculated: Sectarianism ought to be dead in the colonies. Mr. Jessep: It seems that a thorough hornets' nest has been stirred up. Sir William Lyne: If you were a straight and honest man you would not have said what you did. Mr. Jessep: Much obliged for the compliment. (Laughter, and uproar.) Sir William Lyno (warmly): I do not want to speak to' you again as long as we know each other. Mr. Jessep endeavoured to soothe the Premier, and said that he had. not uttered a single sentence in disparagement of the Premier. (Uproar.) A Member: What did you say, then? Mr. Jessep: What I said I am prepared to say again. ' Mr, D. O'Connor (excitedly): Bigotry! Bigotry! (Uproar.) Mr. Meagher charged Mr. Jessep with having tried to galvanise into life the corpse of sectarianism. Mr. Jessep retorted that tho idea .was absurd. Mr. Barnes (hotly): Yellow pup! Mr. Jessep: He says " Yellow pup." Tho yellow pup is always able to hold its own. (Uproar, cheers, and counter cheers.) Mr. Jessep, amid a fire of interjections from the benches, finally declared, " What I said I am prepared to stand by," and resumed his seat in the midst of general disorder. .-,'.•.
