Jacky Porter, a very old aboriginal, declared that ho remained in the camp during the tragedy, and took no part in it. Other evidence was similar. Jimmy Governor's wife laughed repeatedly while giving her evidence. • A verdict of wilful murder against Jimmy and Joo Governor, Jack Underwood, Jack Porter, and Mrs. Governor was returned. At tho inquest on Mackay his wife deposed that she opened the door to the blacks. One said: "Wo are murderers. Come outside, tWo kill you all." Ho struck her twico with a tomahawk as she closed tho door. Failing to break the door, they smashed all tho windows with stones. She opened the door and went outside again with her little girl. Tho blacks mado them stand on the verandah till they searched the place all over. Meantime they had split open Mackay's head with a tomahawk. When they came out they demanded monoy. She gave them £8. Thoy took a horse and saddle and cleared. Mackay died in two hours.

Jacky Underwood was arrested by 'a civilian. He was found to be wounded.

A reign of terror exists amongst isolated settlers, who aro afraid to go to bed, and are guarding their houses. Armed • parties of civilians guard the town of Merriwa, and a number of reservists aro also armed to assist the police and guard settlers.
