DEVONPORT BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Devonport Bowling Club took placo last evening in the Municipal Chambers. There was a good attendance. Mr. Alex. Harvey, retiring piosident, presided. Tire secretary and treasurer (Mr. Larncr) read tho annual report and bal-ance-sheet. The committee congratulated tho members on tho continued prosperity of tho club. For various reasons, tho club did not enter teams for tho Auckland Bowling Association's pennant flag. At tho North Island Bowling Tournament, although tho club did not carry off any Rrizes, it upheld tho honour of tho club, and showed good play during tho tournament. Tho sum of £22 13s was collected by members for expenses at tournament, which left a balance of £5 13s to credit of the club, Next season Ihero would bo a champion fours tournament at Gisborno,, about tho month of January, when ic was hoped that the club would be represented. Tho club was congratulated on having so many liberal friends wiro presented prizes for competition, Special mention was made of tho Club Championship Shield, presented by tho club's life member (Mr. A. Kolin), which was described as a rare work of art. Mr. Kohn also promised to manufacture a small shield each year on which the winner's name could be inscribed. Tho shield is to bo always tho property of the club, and to I» held year by the winner. The Club Championship ShiblcLwas won by Mr. Harry Niccol, a second year player; Mr. H. Nicool was also tho runner-up for tho champion of champions' prizo. The other matches wero all keenly contested. There had beeF an increase of 19 new members during tho year, and tlio total membership was 48. Regret was expressed at tho death of Mr. Wood, an enthusiastic bowler. Indebtedness wsjs acknowledged to Mr. J. W. Harrison, tho grocn superintendent, for tho state of tho green. Tho club's property was in good order, and it might bo necessary, as funds came in, to onlargo tho pavilion.. An arrangement had been como to with the Domain Board to givo tho uso of the green free, provided tho ground was well maintained. This arrangement was regarded as a very satisfactory one. Tho balanco-sheot read disclosed a most satisfactory stato of affairs. At tho commencement of tho year there was a balance in hand of £2 17b 3d. Total receipts woro £105 4h 3d, and balanco to bo carried forward £8 4s Bd. There was an outstanding liability of £65, without Interest. Tho report and balance-sheet woro unanimously adopted. Tho prcsidont then presented tho prizes to tlio respective winners with appropriate remarks:—Kohn's championship shield (carrying also Chamber's silver shield): Mr. Harry Niccol. Handicap singles, bowling-case (presented by Mr. J. J. CraigJ: Mr. Gardner. Ditto, pair bowls, second pnzo (presented by Mr. J. J. Craig): Mr. Mitchell. Club's pairs, pair silver-mounted bowls (presented by T. and S. Morrin and Co.): Mr. Gardner. Fair of ivory bowls (presented by E. Porter and Co.): Mr. .1. C. Webster. Firstyear players: Pair howls (presented by Mr. V. J. Lamer), Mr. Wood. Consolation prize, inlaid desk (presented by Mr. Montgomery): Mr. Larner. Tho cleotion of officers then took place as follows: —President, Mr. J. W. Harrison; vice-presidents, Mr. Stewart and Captain Best; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Lamer; committee, Messrs. Alex. Harvey, J. Miller, Mitchell, and Eyre; auditor, Mr. Ker; dclogatos to Auckland Bowling Association, the president (Mr. Harrison), Messrs. Harvey, Lamer, and M. Niccol; green superintendent, Mr. Harrison; deputy, Mr. A. Harvey. Mr. Harrison was then inducted to tho chair by,tho retiring president. Prizes or trophies for tho coming season wero offered by tho president, a trophy to be left to the committee. . Messrs. Mitciiell and Miller offered prizes to first-yoar players, and! Messrs. A, Harvoy, Stewart, Montgomery, and Skcatos Cycle Company. Tho following gentlemon were elected members:—Dr. Laing, Messrs. J. C. Macky (Mayor), It. J. Roberts, and Ralfo .(ohainpion bowler of Onvnnru). Votes -of■' thanks were accorded to Mr. Kohn for tho shield, Mr. Chambors for tho silver , cup, • and the donors, of other prizes; to tlio outgoing officers, specially for their services'- during the past year, and especially to -the green superintendent and sooro'tary and treasurer'; and, to tlio ladies who provided 1 "afternoon" tea" on tho green during the season, and to the : pros*.'
