WAITING FOR THE NEWS.
AFTER a night of yearning. As dawns the winter morn, And with the city traffic Another day is born; Then hearts arc sick and restless, In " palace, shop, and mews," Alas! sad Englishwomen, We're " Waiting for the news." As in its crimson glory . Tlie sun sinks slowly down, Our eyes see but one picture, A veldt all parched and brown, Where wounded men lie dying. Amid thoso evening dews— Pray, pray, oh. Englishwomen! While " waiting for the news," We gave our test and dearest, To fight, to dare, to do; Though hearts are bare and empty, We know our duty too! We would not keep or check them, Hud we the power to ehoot-c: Be brave, oh. •, Englishwomen, , ■;-• Though " waiting for the news." Though only wives and sweetheart! May hearts be bold and keen "• ! To prove us .leal worthy ' v r ;; . ' Of Soldiers of the Qneon." And as the morn is dawning •" ■ . ■ O'er " palace, shop, and/mews," . God help us Englishwomen Thus ''waiting for the newel" '
