•'At the Racing Conference held last week at Wellington, the proposals respecting tho placing of "the jockeys' and trainers' provident funds in the hands of trustees appointed by tho Conference, excited a very heated discussion, and much feeling was displayed by the representatives of some of tho metropolitan and country clubs. The delegates from Hawke's Hay lodged written protests through the Hon. Mr. Ormond. In the course of his remarks, the Hon. G. McLean (Dunedin) said he did not know what position his club would take up if their funds were taken away by the Conference. Ho spoke very warmly on the proposal, and complained of the centralisation and usurping powers of the metropolitan clubs. Mr. Percival (Auckland) coincided with tho views of the previous speaker. Mr. Hugo Friedlandcr mado a stirring appeal to the delegates to carry the proposals. The chairman, Sir Geo. Clifford, stated that he was instructed by the Canterbury Jockey Club to say that that body were quite willing to hand the funds at any moment to trustees appointed by the Conference. He regretted the feeling of the clubs, and spoko very feelingly on (ho insinuation that it was intended to administer the funds from Christchurch. Ho would 'certainly resign if ho thought there was any idea that in bringing tho proposal forward it was the intention to centralise at Christchurch. It was hard to say where the funds would he administered from if the proposal were carried. The present chairman's successor might live at Auckland, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, 01 any other place; but he thought vhe proposal a good one. Mr. Ormond made tho explanation that such an insinuation'as tho chairman had mentioned was not intended. Dr. Connolly (Wanganui) ivas in favour of tho proposal, which did not secure the requisite majority, and was negatived, the voting being 17 for and 11 against.
