The crew of five men attempted to land in the vessel's boat, but it capsized, and the captain (Peter Williams), the cook (John Glceson), and Seamen Bernard and : Dowling were drowned. [The Empress of India was a wooden vessel, built at the Manning River, New South Wales, in 1877, and was owned by Mr. John Hibbard, of Sydney. She was 70.9 ft long, 20ft broad, and 6.Bft deep, with a tonnage of 62. . *&;
