RETRENCHMENT IN WELLINO TON SCHOOLS.

Wellington, Tuesday. ; In consequence of the unsatisfactory condi< tion of its finances' the Wellington Education Board is instituting drastic retrenchments in several directions. The Board's grant to the Technical School is likely to be/j cut down by one-third. Notices have been | sent to about 40 teachers in' various part'|. of the district, apprising them of. the pos-. sibility of dismissal or reduced salaries, and ;.i to give them opportunity to make any eX«i; pknatioii they may deem desirable. :It appears that in many instances schools have been overstaffed and overpaid on *he at'.. tendance basis, and as the funds of the Board, are at a low ebb it becomes essential for the Board to consider the question of lesseningvr. the staffs and salaries where circumstance warrant it.
