ATTEMPTED SUICIDE OF AN AUSTRIAN GUMDIGGER.
Ox Saturday morning the police authorities received information that an Austrian named Stripe Frankovich had • attempted suicide about eight o'clock in a boardinghouse, in Lower Hobson-street, the proprietor of which is Mr. Nicholas Likich. Frankovich had been a boarder for over three months past, having come to Auckland from the gumfields. Of late he has been in illhealth, and appeared to be somewhat eccentric in his manner. During the last few days he stated that poison had been put in his food. He had been attended by Dr. Moir, It appears that on Saturday morning two of his countrymen, who occupied adjacent bedrooms, were going down the passage, when the glass in the dooi was suddenly smashed, and they saw Frankovich come out of his bedroom with a razor in his hand, blood streaming down his arm. The two Austrians took the razor from him, and on going into his bedroom noticed marks of blood on the floor. Sergeant Treanor, who came to the boardinghouse, and who has gone through a course of " first aid " and Ambulance instruction, put a pad across the throat of Frankovich, and bandaged it. The windpipe was partly severed, but the man was able to talk. In the meantime, Dr. Shaman, who had been telephoned for, came on the scene, and after approving of what had been done, ordered the injured man to lie removed to the hospital. Constable McCarthy removed him to the institution for treatment. On inquiring at the hospital last night as to Frankovich's condition, the reply was that his condition remained th same as when admitted.
