AFTER-DINNER PERSIFLAGE OVER

240 MILES OF WIRE. The first lengthy speech ever spoken over a long-distance telephone was delivered by Senator Chauncey Depew lately to the New York Transportation Club. Mr. Depew spoke from his house at Washington. Every word was distinctly heard by the members of tire club, assembled at their annual dinner in the Manhattan Hotel, New York, 240 miles away. The guests were provided with small receivers. Mr. Depew's witty remark's were frequently applauded, and the shouts of approval We're heard at Washington. After the speech Mr. Daniels, chairman of (lie club, proposed the health of Queen Victoria, and Mr. Depew applauded the toast and drank it with the other guests.

Mr. Bryan and other politicians are considering the possibilities of speeches by longdistance telephone during the coming Presidential campaign, and may adopt the plan extensively.
