COMMERCIAL.
New Zealand Herald Office, Friday evening. AT a time when articles of produco in common demand and general use are fluctuating in price, it is a difficult thing to ascertain with accuracy the fair avorago price when individual traders are largely working independent of others. According to the opinions expressed by a large deputation of merchants to-day, our quotations for butter and eggs this morning were too high. During tho whole of this week, eggs have been arriving in unusually large quantities, and some tradesmen have only been paying lOd per dozen throughout tho week, which was regarded as tho highest price that should have been quoted. As to fresh butter, they were of opinion that tho present state ot the market did not justify a higher quotation than 8d per pound wholesale, for really "■"(I farmers' butter. From present appearances, it soems that eggs may bo expected to experience further decline in price. Messrs. Warren Blylk sold yesterday a cottage and allotment in Summer-street, under keen competition, for the sum of £200.
LONDON. By Telegraph.— Association.— London', July 19. Silver is 2s 4 3-16 d per oz. Per New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited.) London, July 19. Wheat: The market is inactive. New Zealand wheat average is worth 29s 6tl per 4951b ; New Zealand long berried, 30s 6d. Tallow: There is a better demand for medium and common qualities, but other descriptions are unchanged. Medium and inferior mutton tallow has advanced 3d per cwt since last report. THE BANK RATE. By Telegraph.—Press Association—Copyright. London, July 19. The bank rate of discount is 4 per cent. GRAIN MARKET.
IwvEKCAROIII,, Friday. The Invereargill Grain Broiors' Association report as follows:— Oats: The demand is brisk, and owing to the fact that stocks are very small the market is firm, with an upward tendency. To-day's quotations are: A grade, 2s; B, Is lid; C, la lOd (F.o.b. Bluff, sacks in). AUCKLAND PRODUCE MARKETS. The tone of the Auckland produce markets has been generally good, the demand showing ii, marked improvement on the last fewweeks in all lines. The butter market has been left quite bare, and supplies appear to bo so short in Taranaki that local agents representin? the largest makers are without supplies, Taranaki rolls are now worth Is per lb, while good farmers' qualities realised lOd and lOjd per lb. Keg and pastry lots were in keen demand. Eggs suffered a heavy fall during the week, and although supplies were light at the auctions, lOd to Is was realised. Cheese
is so scarce that from 6d to 6jd is askod for small lots to come forward. Bacon and hams, although plentiful, are a shade firmer in value. Tho fruit market has been well supplied. A largo shipment of Hobart apples arrived by the Waihora from Sydney, and sold well, but tho shipment bad the effect of dropping the prices for local and Southerngrown. Lemons and oranges continue to
.command good prices. Poultry was scarcer, but prices are unchanged. Grain and other produce was in full supply, without any chances in value. The following is a summary of the results obtained at the auction sales yesterday
