DEATH OF A CRICKETER.
By Telegraph-Pros? Association-Copyright.
London, May 14. Thomas Hearne, the well-known cricketer, is dead.
Thomas Hearno was born at Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, in 1826. He was a fine batsman in his day, possessing good sound defence, and hit to all parts of the field. Hearnc did not appear at Lord's until late in life, and he was 36 years of age before he represented tho Flayers of England against the Gentlemen. He also played for Middlesex and M.C.C., and was very successful for both. His favourite stroke was the old-fashioned draw, which he used with great certainty and effect. As a bowler, he was above medium pace, but not fast; but he bowled very straight, and kept a fair length. Hearne was a very good fieldsman, close in, and could keep wicket. He succeeded Grundy as head bowler at Lord's in 1372, which position he held for many years.
