MAFEKING.

RELIEF COLUMN BEYOND VRYBURG.

London, May 14.

The Daily Mail correspondent with the Mafeking relief column reports that the force has passed beyond Vryburg. [UY TKLEGRAI'IT.— ASSOCIATION.] CiiitisTCiiuncH, Monday. At the City Council meeting a committee was appointed to make arrangements for public celebration when the news of the relief of Mafeking is received.

i The Mayor (Mr. D. Goldic) received a , ' communication from the Telegraph Depa-t----j raent yesterday asking if any steps were I being taken for a public demonstration on die | arrival of news of the relief of Mafeking, %nd I offering to communicate during the day or j night with any responsible person immedi- • ■ atcly on the expected intelligence coming to hand. No such steps have yet been taken in Auckland, but Mr. Goldie is now in comI munication with Lieutenant-Colonel Binks ion the matter. His Worship is not disposed j for anything of the nature of a prearranged ' display, but steps will no doubt be taken I to make the news, on its arrival, as public I as possible, and the citizens may be de- | pended on to do the rest. In this connection, I however, it may be pointed out that the j Telegraph Department in other centres has : made arrangements for making the n»ws known irrespective of what the municipal authorities may do, and we do not see why -he department "in Auckland should be less remiss.
