The Northern Company's steamer Waitangi arrived from Tanranga, Tairaa, and Whaugamata yesterday morning, and leaves for Tauranga at 7 o'clock this evening. /The Northern Company's steamer Muritai arrived from the Great Barrier Inst night, v and leaves at 9 o'clock to-night for Kennedy's Bay, Kuaotiinn, and Mercury Bay. Yesterday afternoon the Northern Company's steamer Ohinerouri arrived from Awanui, Waiharara, and llohoura with several passengers and a cargo of kauri gum, etc, She leaves for the same ports again to-mor-row afternoon. THE UTA. The Wellington Harbour Board's launch Uto arrived at Napier from Auckland at 6 o'clock on Monday evening, thus making a remarkably good passage, as she did not leave this port until 2.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. The engines worked smoothly and well, and the little vessel averaged eight 3:not9 per hour. After inspection by the Napier harbour authorities the Uta left for Wellington. The contractors for the hull and engine are to be congratulated upon the success of the vessel's maiden trip.

THE TE ANAU. The Union Company's steamer To Anau, Captain John Bernech, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports yesterday afternoon, the steamer's progress having been much retarded by meeting with strong head winds and heavy seas after leaving Gisborne. Mr. Percy Isaac, the purser, reports that the • steamer left Dunedin at 4 p.m. on the 4th inst.. and called at Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, leaving the latter port at 9 a.m. on the 9th, and arriving at 2.45 p.m. yesterday. Fine weather prevailed to Gisborne; thence fresh north-east winds, head seas, heavy rain, and thick weather. The Te Anau. leaves for East Coast and Southern ports at noon 10-morrow.

NEW STEAMER FOR THE UNION S.S. COMPANY.

On March 27 the steel screw steamer Whangape, built by Sir Raylton Dixon and Co. (Limit'd), at Middlesbrough, to the order of the .Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, proceeded to sea for her official trials under the command of Captain Clark. She 13 built to Lloyd's spar-deck rule, 100 Al class, her nrincipal dimensions being:—Length, 330 ft, by 44ft Bsin, by 25ft 9in, and has a deadweight carrying capacity of about 4700 tons. The. upper deoks are of steel and iron, and the poop, .bridge, and forecastle decks of pitch pine. Triple -expansion engines have been fitted by ,- Messrs. T. Richardson and Sons (Limited), of Hartlepool, having cylinders 23in, 36in,.and 59in in diameter, by 42in stroke, supplied with steam by two large single-ended boilers, working at 1801b pressure. At the conclusion of the trials, which passed off successfully, the vessel proceeded to Blyth to,load.
