Generals Button, Broadwood and Hamilton reconnoitred the Sand River, north of Winburg, and found the enemy in considerable force, A party of Boers occupying a farmhouse in the Vet River district, under the cover of the white flag, wounded three West Australians. The British at Rooidam buried 35 Boers. Eight British were killed and J3 wounded. Lord Roberts reports that the railway between Brandfort and Smaldeel is seriously damaged, and tha bridge across the Vet River is irreparably injured, greatly delaying the transport of stores. A party of West Australians discovered concealed explosives on the Smaldeel line. General French's whereabouts is a mystery. London, May 8. The splendid behaviour of MajorGeneral Button's colonial division is much commented on.

It is declared that the division largely contributed to the recent successes.

Brigadier-General Brabant has effected a junction with General Itundle's forces near Thabanchu.
