CORRESPONDENCE CONDENSED.
"Engineer" writes giving an elaborate plan for bringing tho wafer of Lake Tukapuna across the harbour. There is ono consideration in connection with tho lake which we do not think has been examined. There are several outlets from the luko in tho scoria along tho sca-bcach. From these outlets largo quantities of water issue.- Tho lido flows over them, but so great is tho prossuro of tho frosh water that tho soa does not penetrate through tho fissures into the lake. The level of tho lako is some 6ft or Bft above high-water mark. : If the lake wore reduced by, say, 6ft or. Bft by tho large quantity roauirod for Auckland, might not tho
salt find - access ? In reference to the proposed purchase of a destructor, "Engineer" says:— "There seems to be no doubt as to tho necessity for a destructor, but the cost stands in the way. Why, the Council already owns a property in Freeman's Bay with a tall chimney which could be adapted to the purpose in a week. There is a high level to tip rubbish into it and a low lovol to remove that no consumed. Roughly speaking, some hundreds of tons per week could be got rid of here."
