Conference in conformity with the new rule passed on tho subject. : THE DENTIST INQUIRY. i Tho inquiry by the stewards of tho Avondale Jockey Club into the display of the horso Dentist in tho Steeplechase at the club's meeting on Saturday, was held yesterday afternoon at tho offices of tho secretary, Mr. H. H. Hayr, Vulcan Lane, Mr. M. Foley, chairman, presiding. J. Rae, rider of DonI tist in the event mentioned, in the courso of his evidence, gave it as his opinion that the horso ran off at tho jump owing to Conscript ' swerving, and gave it as his reason for keeping bo far out of tho race that he considered ' he could come away and win at any stage. Ho had backed the horso for a large sum of ' money; more, in fact, than ho could afford, £20 having been wired to New 'Plymouth . for investment, while an additional £25 had been invested on tho totalisator at Avondalo on his behalf. Major F. Nelson George also 1 gavo evidence, stating that he was seated in '■ a cab in close proximity to the fence at which ' Dentist; ran off, and was quite satisfied that i Rao did not pull tho horso off. He did not ' think the hostile demonstration of the pubbo against Rao was justified. The stewards, after a full inquiry, adopted a resolution to tho effect that tho evidence adduced went to ' show that Rao rode the horse Dentist to win, and expressing satisfaction at the evidence given. _ . SALE OF TROTTING STOCK. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile I Agency Company (Limited) held a pale of blood trotting stock on behalf of Mr. H. Chatteris at his Kohimarama estate yesterday. Mr. 11. O. Nolan acting as auctioneer. The attendance was satisfactory, but bidding was not brisk, out of 18 lots submitted, only four being disposed of. A grey gelding by ! Jersey went to Dr. Lewis at 26 guineas: also : the 'five-year-old gelding Jack, by Albert 1 Victor, at 16 guineas. The trotting mare Vic, also sired by Albert Victor, was knocked down to Mr. James Martin at a bid • of 10 guineas, and a yearling chestnut filly by Judge Byron to Kay Bros, for £4.
