- POLLARD'S OPERA COMPANY. Os Saturday night "The French Maid" was produced for the last time by Pollard's Opera Company, in the presence of a largo and appreciative audience, tho pieco going off most successfully. To-night Mr. Pollard will enter on the last week of what has been artistically and financially a most successful season. Tho attraction to-night will be tho revival of an old favourite in Audran's melodious work, "Olivette." This popular work has not been beard hero for some four years, and as the tuneful music will receive overy justice at tho hands of "The Pollards," tho production is certain to be welcomed by playgoers. Tho east will bo of unusual strength, and will sorvo to introduce a .quartette of artistes in entirely now roles. Miss May Boatty will bo seen in tho name part, in which sho has soveral charming numbers to sing. Miss Jonnio Opio is cast for tho part of tho Countess. The music of this character should suit her voice to perfection. Miss Gertio Campion undertakes tho character of Veloutino, tho pert chambermaid. Mr. Chas. Carter should be heard to great advantage as Valentino, especially as ho has several opportunities of using his excellont tenor voico. Tho comedy elcmont will be in tho capable hands of Messrs. Percy, Quoaly, Stephens, and Nable. Tho pieco will bo staged up to the usual Pollard standard. "Olivotto" can only bo performed for two nig'lits, "will bo replaced on Wednesday night by tho ever-welcomo popular opera, "Paul Jones," with Miss Jennie Opio in the name part. On Friday "The Geisha" will bo revived. There will bo tho usual weekly matinee on Saturday, and the season will terminate on Saturday night. Full particulars regarding tho pieces to bo played for tho last two performances will bo advertised in to-morrow's issue. DIX'S GAIETY COMPANY. The City Hall was packed to tho doors on Saturday night, when Oix's Gaiety Company presented the usual weekly change of programme. Tho occasion was ono of more than ordinary interest to frequenters of this popular place of amusement, inasmuch as tho last appearance of tho Williams Sisters had been announced. As members of tho Gaiety Company, these four talented young artistes have completely won tho hearts of their audiences, and on Saturday night tho unstinted applause showered upon them for their singing, dancing, and trick-bicycle riding, was sufficient proof that their contributions to the programme will be greatly missed. During tho evening Miss Flo Williams was the recipient of a bouquet of choice flowers, in recognition of her clever feats of bicycle riding, and, by request, she sang with Miss Ruby Williams, as an extra item, the duet, "Did You Speak?" which fairly brought down the house. _ Mr. Walter Rivera was loudly applauded for his new patriotic song, "There's Something in the English After All," and later gave a remarkably clever rendering of the dramatic scona "The Tramp." Mr. Frank Yorke was j to the fore, as usual, with his budget of comicalities, and kept tho audience tho- ' roughly amused whilst he was on tho stage. i/onnon, Hyman, and I/cnnon revived their brilliant acrobatic act, "The Chinoso Laundry." and received an imperative recall. Miss May Marlow increased her rapidly-grow-ing popularity, her "icng,"What Do I Care? being especially liked, and resulting in a doublo encore. Mr. Johnny Collins gave some excellent item.?, and introduced several new and clever " gags," which delighted the i audience. Miss Annetta Bodin was successI ful in her various songs, which wore well ren- ' dered. The new farce, which brought the i .programme to an end, was extremely funny, ! and was greeted with roars of laughter. tonight a complete change of programme will bo inaugurated. There will be a new firspart, entitled "A Day in Morocco, with augmented company, ballet, male chorus, prisma! effects, etc. Miss Ida Roelyn, who is described as Australia's renowned serio- ! comic and danseuse, will make her first. jap- | nearanco in New Zealand, as will the War--1 saw Brothers, the celebrated English musical ! and burlesque artistes. Mr. Burke s efficient | orchestra will continue to supply varied musij cal selections. ELLERSLIE SOCIAL CLUB. 1 The fourth annual meeting of the Ellershe Social Club was held in Cairns' Hall on May 2 Tho Rev. F. W. Walker presided, and there was u good attendance of members. The report &nd balance-sheet disolosed a very i satisfactory state of affairs, there being a : balance in hand of £3 15s 9d. During tho past season 87 mombers wero enrolled. ; Special mention was made of tho splendid work done by the secretary, Mr. E. C. Tho opening concert of the eighth session of : tho above was held in tho Otara Hall on ' May 1. Tho programme opened with an i eloquent address by the president, Mr. C. W. Clark. The following item* were ad- . mirably rendered by friends from Auckland: -Pianoforte solo, "Shades of Evening," Miss Wriglcy; song, "A Poll Parrot Told : It to Me," Mr. Tiidehnne; song, "The Old : Brigade," Mr. Dougall; song, "Island of i Dreams," Miss Wriglcy; reading, "Lovo ! in a Balloon," Mr. Bullen; song, "Tho i Storm Fiend," Mr. Lee; vocal duet, "Flow I on Thou Shining River," Misses Wrigley : and Smith; song, "As Your Hair Grows |"Whiter." Mr. Treblecoo; song, "The Echo, . Miss May Short: song, "Tho Last Mile- ' stone," Miss Smith; comic sketch, "The Reception," Mr. Stool. Each item received an enthusiastic recall. The whole closed with ; the National Anthem. After partaking of ] refreshments kindly provided by the ladies i of the society, the Auckland frionds left by 'bus for town. Tho business for May 8 is a debate, "Was New Zealand justified in i helping so largely in tho South African i War?' Affirmative, Mr. C. H. Lupton; negative, Mr. S. Hodge. KNOX CHURCH BAZAAR. The bazaar, which was opened in the Choral Hall on Thursday, in aid of the funds of Knox Church, Parnell, was brought to a conclusion on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance of the public, particularly in tho evoning, when an excellent programme of itoms was submitted. Professor Carrollo's young lady pupils repeated tho khaki march, which won them so much kudos at the Ladies' Bonovolent Society's Easter Fair. The march was gono through with limelight effects, and the young ladios' splendid performance was greatly applauded. " Soldiers of the Queen," by Miss Maud Howard, was, of courso, a popular item. Mrs. Ernest M. Davis and Miss Williams also contributed songs; Rabbi S. A. Goldstein rendered n 'collo solo, and Mr. Conloy gave an exhibition of club swinging, all of which wero much appreciated. Mrs. Jarley's Waxworks, under tho diroction of Miss Sayers and Mr. Ernest E. Cromer, were exhibited twice during tho evening with considerable success. Tho total takings of the bazaar wero, so far as it known, WM 133 3d, but a few returns have yet to come in. This splendid result must be very gratifying to the promoters.
