BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tub monthly mooting of the Borough Council .was held in the Zion Hill schoolroom on April 12. Present: Messrs. J. G. Kay, J. R. Gasooigne,. A. Keyee, J. Hadfield, J. Low, and W. ' Wallace. " In the absence of the Mayor, Mr. Kay was .voted to tho chair, and in tho absenco of the town clerk, Mr. Gascoigno was appointed to take the minutes. Accounts to the amount of £35 6s were passed for payment. The .tender of Mr. T. Church was accepted for the carting contract. The tender of Mr. J. J. Craig was accepted for the 6upply of shingle. The ohairman of Works Oommitteo ■ reported that no tonders had been received for broken metal. Messrs. Koyes and Gascoigne wero authorised to try and obtain a supply of broken metal. On the motion of Mr, Gascoigne, tho town clerk was instructed to .apply personally to all ratepayers who are in arrears with their rates. A list of the nemos was read of tho owners of property on which the pino trees overhang the footpaths. On tho motion of Mr. Gascoigne, the town clerk was instructed to writo to the owners requesting them to lop tho branohos, otherwise it would bo done by the Council at their expense. Mr. Wallace said it was most unjust for the Council to compel owners to trim their trees, while the Council permitted pine trees to grow on the Birkdale Road. ~ Mr. Hadfield said he had an eye nearly knocked out by a branch from one of theso treos, and strongly urged that they should bo cut down. It was resolved, "That Mr. Hadfield obtain an estimate of the cost of cutting down tho pino trees on one side of tho Birkdalo Road." Mr. Wallace gavo notice of motion, "That the town clerk be asked to explain his conduct re the tenders for carting." Mr. Gascoigno said the footpaths in Bath Road , needed shells placed thereon. Roterred to tho Works Committee. A letter was read from several ratepayers asking that tho footpath in Northcote Torrace bo attended to. Referred to th? Works Committee. . On the motion of Mr. Gascoigno tho town clerk was instructed to write to tho Auckland City Council for 500 circulars ro prevention of tho bubonic plague, tho circulars to bo distributed in the borough. Mr. Wallace stated that there were complaints of nightsoil being carted from Chelsea between seven and eight a.m., also before dark. Mr. Gascoigne was asked to inquire into tho complaint. The matter of a site for a town hall was deferred until next meeting. Mr. Kay gave notice of motion, "That at next meeting the annual rate of Is 9d in the £ bo levied." Mr. Wallace gave notice of motion, " That the annual rate do not exceed Is 6d in tho £." This concluded the meeting, which, at times, became very lively. Mi.
