The nation has very generously responded to the appeal to pay, pay, pay. Some figures as to the amount of money already subscribed to the various funds show how deep down John Bull has put his hand into his pocket. Received. Spent. Royal Patriotic Fund ... £329,000 No information. Soldiers' and Sailors' Famines Association ... 90,000 £50,000 Lloyds' Patriotic Fund ... 80,500 nil. Imperial War Fund ... 4.539 3,231 Daily Telegraph Fund ... 117.077 110,000 Daily Mail Fund 74,300 54,000 To these amounts many others have to bo added. Thus the Lord Mayor retains in his hands, to bo disposed of at his own discretion, a sum of £71,000, some part of which has already been expended. Another £60,000 has been raised in Liverpool; Manchester has about half that sum; and some 20 provincial journals have raised quite another £100,000.
