WHITE. i White to play and win. THE "HERD LADDIE." A dozen years ago, in one of our quiet streets on the south side of Glasgow—in a quaint barber's shop—there used to meet a number of draughts " dons." and many an exciting tussle took place. Wyllie occasionally looked in, and one day an aspiring amateur tackled tho Herd Laddie, and the game played, which wo give, had a most brilliant ending:— GAME No. 372.-" Paisley." Black, Amateur; White, Wyllie. 11-16 6-9 2-6 17-22 22-13 24-19 28-24 26-22 14-10 14-9 ' ' 8-11 11-16 6-10 22-26 5-14 22-18 26-23 14- 7 10-7 23-19 4-8 8-11 3-10 26-30 16-23 18-14 31-27 22-17 7-2 27,- 2 9-18 16-20 9-13 30-25 20-27 23-14 25-21 17-14 2-7 a 7-16 ■ 10-17 11-16 10-17 25-22 12-19 21-14 30-26 21-14 18-14 32-16 16-23 7-11 13-17 1-6 White ' 27-18 29-25 25-21 21-17 wins. Notes by " One Who was There." (a) Wyllie took long to consider the position at this point, and made several feints to move the king from square 2, before he moved it to soitare 7. Then the Amateur, after a couple of moves, played I—6. (h) The position is now as follows:— BLACK.
WHITE. White to play. Wyllie with alacrity moved 21-17, 22-13, 14—9, 5—14, and with a smile on his features, showed the move 23-19, and then played it. lint none of the spectators seemed to comprehend the full depth of the cut, several saying it was a draw, until Wyllie played 7-16 at the 56th move, when all seemed lost in amazement.—Draughts World. GAME No. 373.-" Glasgow." Played between Mr. A. If. Jeremy (Black) and Mr. 11. Pillsbury (White). A game with a history of 100 years behind it.—Pittsburgh Despatch. 11-15 27-11 16-19 22-18 14-17 25-21 23-19 7-16 25-22 15-22 21-14 1-8-11 20-11 10-15 25-18 9-18 20-16 22-17 3-8 17-13 7-10 51—27 d 6-10 11-16 23-24 2- 7a 32— 5-9 15-6 24-20 7-16 30—250 10-14 29-25 5- 9 16-23 24-20 4-8b 18-15 9-14 27-24
While wins. (a) This seems to lose. "Janviers Anderson" gives 4-5, 30—25, B—ll, drawn. (hi This seems the best move, and forms variation 21, " Janviers Anderson," which is given as a White win. (c) At this point Hturges (1800) gave 29-25, drawn; Bethel], in "Janviers Anderson," gave 32—28, to correct Anderson's second edition.
(d) At this point Bethel! gave 20-16, White wins; but .T. Maze, 15 years ago, showed a draw against 20-16. I substitute 31-27 to sustain the White win. This improvement does nut seem to lie generally known, as " Snath's Appendix," 1899, gives the imperfect play in "Janvier's Anderson." (e) Mr. Pillshury desires us to discover, if this move was published play, and if previously published, to trace its history. 'Die move was given by Sturges in his edition of 1800 as a draw in reply to 2—7. Our notes, a, 1), c, d, outline the subsequent mutations of the Sturges play during the last 100 years.
liv letter addressed to Mr. H. F. M'Afeer, of Pittsburgh, and published in the Falkirk Mail. Mr. Richard Jordan lias pledged himself to play" with Mr. C. F. Parker, a match of 40 games on the Jordan-Stewart restriction for £200 a-side, " some, time in the autumn of this year." Mr. Jordan has also expressed the wish that either Mr. M'Ateer or Mr. It. W. Patterson (also of Pittsburgh) should act as stake-bolder awl referee.
