BODY OF A MAN FOUND IN THE HARBOUR.
I Yesterday evening, about five o'clock, a I man named Chase informed the police au--1 thorities that the body of a young man was ; floating off the Railway Wharf. Sergeant Gordon and somo of the constables secured ! the body and took it to the ir.orgue. The i body appeared to have been some days in i the water, and that of a young man, about 20 ] years of age. His'height was about sft Bin, fresh conijilexioncd, medium build, clean- ■ shaved, and he was (tressed in a black worsted suit. He wore a white shirt, with paper ! collar, and had on lace-up boots, which api peared to have been half-soled, nnd worn J down in the heel. All the property found lon the body was IOJd and a knife. Dr. ! Shaniian examined the body at the morgue I in tli? evening, as there was a hole like a j punch hole under the left eye. and another under the right cur. The doctor, after fruitlessly endeavouring to discover the exact nature of the wounds, under the limited light of a penny "dip"—the authorities not having laid on gas to the morgue—was obliged to abandon his task, and adjourn his researches till this morning. At a late hour last night the body was identified by the father as that of Joseph McCarthy, of Newmarket. 'I he disappearance of McCarthy was reported to Constable Mark'e, of the Newmarket police station. Deceased's parents state that he had no firearms, but that he was very depressed. He had got some work for a little time at the sugar works, but had been discharged through darkness! An inquest will probably be held to-day.
