HOW THEY WERE SURPRISED. London, January 20. General French explains that Gaptain Dowling's Australian Lancers were halting at a drift to water their horses when they were surprised by the Boers. Capetown, January 19. Further details of the disaster to tho New South Wales Lancers and Australian Horse show that Kilpatrick and Sergeant-Major Griffen, of the Australian Horse, were killed. The following are the missing Lan-cers:—Sergeant-Major Fishei, Sergeant McDonald, Corporal Hopf, and Troopers Daley, Dondeny, Found, Johnstone, Roberts, Taylor, and Whittington. Australian Horse missing : —Corporal Wilson and Troopers Fames and Lynn.
