FOR SOUTH AFRICA.

In our news columns we, give a detailed and graphic account of the departure of the second contingent which New Zealand is sending to the seat of war. They go with the tender farewells of friends, and with the heartfelt acclamations and good wishes of the whole colony. May they render great service to the Empire ! They all know that they are entering on no mere picnic, but on an arduous service involving great hardship and no small amount of risk. The whole proceedings on Saturday were a splendid manifestation of the sentiment of the colony, and all that, was done to give a hearty send will be concurred in from the North Cape to the Bluff. The speeches were all appropriate and in good taste. His Excellency spoke''as the representative of Her Majesty, as one who grasped the bearing all these events have upon the Empire, and also as a man having keen sympathy with those who have heroically volunteered to fight by the side of the British troops in South Africa. The Premier, in announcing that there would be a third contingent, and in expressing the determination of New Zealand to fight as if for its own existence, spoke for the whole people. Colonel Pole-Penton's address was that of a soldier to soldiers. We hope that the second voyage of the Waiwera may be as fortunate as the last.
