At the last meeting of Ohinemnri County Council a large portion of the time was taken up in discussing the conditions empowering the Ohinemnri Lighting Company to furnish electric lighting and power in the Oliinemitri district, Bomo of the now Council members objecting to granting a monopoly for Mich a long period. Eventually it was moved by Mr Barry, and seconded by Mr. McClelland, "That, subject to the condition! 'ii'ir.g fcund legal and correct by the county solicitors, tho Council take the necessary steps to carry out the scheme." Mr. Casrolla moved, and Air. Murrinun seconded, the following amendment, "That Paoroa, (varan;ahake, and Waitoa bo cut out of the ngreeinent if it confers a monopoly for 30yoan." The amendment was lost on the casting vole of the chairman, who again had to exercise his casting vote when the motion was pi.t to the mooting. Mr. Casrelle, who is caking a great interest in the matter, now intends to give notice of a motion to rescind the icsolution in question. At tlie Rolonia Town Board meeting on Jan. 10 (writes our conespondent), the question of water supply engaged the attention of members. After a lengthy discussion the following resolution was carried : —"That the Government be again reminded that at the first sale of town sections an adequate ■water supply was promised ; that so far only Fenton, Arawa, and a portion of Tutanekai Streets had been reticulated ; that nearly all tne sections in the other streets had been leased, and substantial buildings erected, but no water supply had been provided ; that such a state of affairs was inimical to t he welfare of the town, and a great inconvenience to leaseholders ; that the Government be asked to authorise the expenditure of a sum of money to cany out this important work, the necessity of which had been frequently urged." In regard to the above Captain Turner Irs since inspected a source of water supply near the foot of Moerangi. This supply is estimated to be sufficient for a town of 15,000 inhabitants, and could be utilised at comparatively little expense. The Government will probably be urged to avail themselves of this supply, and abandon the other schemes previously recommended. A discussion also took place in , regard to the removal of d row of gum trees in the sanatorium grounds, and Mr. Brent asked the Board to protest against the State Forester's action in regard to same. This was not acceded to, but a petition is now in course of signature, asking the Minister lor Lands to defer action till the objectors have an opportunity of showing cause why they should remain.
